Summoned during the ritual, D will help Lou in the search for Angelene, Mallory’s twin sister, the only clue to finding the disappeared Mallory and reverse the ritual. The strange duo begins a road trip from dusty interstates to lousy strip clubs, during which they’ll have time to know each other and discuss the meaning of life, love, and what does it means to be mortal. Will our unconventional couple find Angelene, and persuade her to help in the search for Mal? Will Lou be able to save his friend Neil, or his own soul for that matter? But importantly: will he make peace with his own Death? DEAD MEN NAKED is Dario’s debut novel. Narrated with the characteristic prose that differentiates Dario’s work – minimalistic at its core, but with incredibly powerful and lyrical flights of fancy – this modern and magical tale uses a touch of humor, philosophy, and poetry, to explore what it takes to accept our own mortality.

A strong and deep emotion and the poetry in every sentence through which it speaks to us Would calling it a literary masterpiece be an exaggeration Dario s new book and his first novel Dead Men Naked is a literary masterpiece It is of no importance what other people say and with how many stars they rate it No stars and no other opinion and review can alter the feeling and sensation I experienced while reading it I am not a person who flirts with occult and otherworldly I also don t think often about death despite my occasional suicidal thoughts and moments when meeting death would be a welcome hideaway and oasis of nirvana and nonexistence from the everyday monsters of the world of the living The way Dario Cannizzaro flirts with it in his Dead Men Naked makes me want to reconsider it.

Dario Cannizzaro is an Irish Italian Writer Poet and Director His stories characterised by weird premises and poetic flights of fancy have appeared in many literary magazines both in English and Italian He lives in Cork Ireland and is currently working on his next novel and feature film. Dead men registers Is he going mad Did this actually happen Is Cannizzaro telling us this tale through the lens of an unreliable narrator These are questions I asked myself as Lou was driven to the police station The game was set and I was immediately drawn into the narrative What follows is a story of strange happenings and undefined magic it is a story about life death and a few things in between the two Lou is completely out of his depth he is a pretty normal guy ordinary He did not expect to get tangled up with such things as mediums the after life and death itself Surprisingly he does not doubt his own sanity through the process he just takes it in his stride and aims for the end as we all must Cannizzaro plays around with his writing a style carried over from his collection of short stories Of Life Death Aliens and Zombies The novel does not fit neatly into genre brackets but instead crosses several thresholds Part horror part fantasy and part magical realism this is best described as a dark tragicomedy It s a work that does not take itself too seriously The trials Lou faces and the painful loss he feels is offset by the undercurrent of dark humour that surrounds the fact that these events are happening that these things are actually real There is also some wisdom in these pages Friendship not the kind that passes over time but real friendship is defined in a very down to earth way that is exactly on the mark I found myself smiling knowingly when Lou described it In addition there are questions about what life is and what we ultimately try do with it We all strive for a sense of satisfaction it s different for each individual with happiness being the key Death is what the novel is really about though and what it means and what it may entail It comes in many different forms and for Lou it certainly enters his life in a unique way For this reason I would recommend this to fans of Neil Gaiman particularly those who enjoyed the Sandman comic book series Obscure constructs such as death have been personified and the everyday world has been bombarded with the fantastic However that s not to say that Cannizzaro writes like Gaiman he is funnier for one and the structure of this book is far less regimented This book is humorous tragic at heart and most of all strangely perceptive I recommend it highly The author sent me this book in exchange for an honest review_________________________________You can connect with me on social media via My Linktree. Dead men registers __________________________________ English Dylan Thomas points at the title That being said I really enjoyed the heart of this novel It really is about Heart and also about having a road trip with Death with all that implies but than that I really enjoyed the humor and the depth of feeling that was expressed. Dead men registers What At the same time Yeah I could actually see the author bleeding out on the page even as I grinned at the Tequila inspired Seances the buddy Death escapades or the total wish fulfillment fantasies surrounding the sisters of whom take up even of this tale than even the MC. Dead men registers It s a quest novel to be sure but of an inner world become fantasy as told through modern anthropomorphism Hello Death Quite a smooth read and very entertaining all told but the best part was the heart. Dead men registers Dead Men Naked Dario Cannizzaro s 2017 novel is a steaming hot cup of surrealism magic realism absurd theater gothic opera and probably some other things the author threw in that I did not pick up on. Dead men registers Essentially Lou wakes up after a hard night of drinking or a night of hard drinking and his best friend is dead and then we have a weird ritual and then we see D a personification of death Thus ensues a road trip between Lou and D and Cannizzaro introduces the reader to a myriad of colorful and interesting characters. Dead men registers This will not fit into any easy category and that is a value added by Cannizzaro s unique and eclectic talent Fans of his 2016 collection of short works Of Life Death Aliens and Zombies will be drawn to this mash up of styles genres and literary devices Parts are fantasy horror science fiction and all rolled up into a quest journey story. Dead men registers Fans of Neil Gaiman or China Mieville may like this as Cannizzaro demonstrates his ability to weave threads of originality and imagination in with mythical and spiritual references and allusions. Dead men registers I d like to see this made into a film and directed by Spike Jonze in the style of his 1999 film Being John Malkovich and with clear references to Woody Allen s 1975 film Love and Death A free copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review English In my first review of Cannizzaro s work a collection of stories titled Of Life Death Aliens and Zombies I wrote Three of my favorite stories are Yet Another Zombie Apocalypse The Best Place to Plan a Mass Shooting and The Announcement These stories carry the weight of a deeper truth and hypothetical and yet not so alien reality if we only allow ourselves to think outside the box we have been put and locked into There is one particular story Impurita the most complex and in depth story of them all but what truly separates it and places it on a special pedestal is the beauty and love with which it is written even though for a brief random and non regular moments Without restraint and holding back Dead Men Naked is an open buddying and intellectual lovemaking with the Grim Reaper and ghosts of our departed loved ones I bet you ll never forget your first real friend and for me that was Neil my first true friend and probably the only one I missed him in my bones and in my gut It was a physical feeling a ghostly limbic resonance with something that wasn t there any It is an ode to death which celebrates life and poetry on every page a detailed and intimate portrait of who we are while stepping over the threshold of the unknown our becoming into something else or nothing the ultimate cognition of what we are so desperate to find out while blooming with life but are unable to do so There are no secrets to the dead as after this life they still exist and known to them is the exit from this stage of fools alas everyone will join in this secret eventually in his own personal way but a great death takes a life of preparation Beautifully portrayed characters are just our guides through this unusually sensual emotional and deep story Everything is subordinated to a strong mixed feeling of dying and staying alive of meeting and escaping the inevitable I am at the lack of words and abundant with tears of strong impressions and if I keep saying I will only ruin the whole experience Therefore I will say only this Dario you nailed it Under the bird s wings are Neil Mallory and Angelene All of them naked We re under the stars in what looks like an ancient Roman arena The moon is shining and the clouds are broken and remade by the wind in an endless dance. Dead men registers The bird flaps his wings once twice The air coming from them throws me to the ground Angelene and Mallory and Neil turn into skeletons and their bones shine like constellations Bernard Janwww. After reading his collection of short stories for a blog tour earlier this year I was very happy when Dario got in touch to ask if I fancied reading Dead Men Naked I m not known for turning down books but I was especially intrigued to see if the same lyrical writing and atmosphere translated into this longer format. Dead men registers This is a great book an interesting blend of the occult a road trip and some very poignant thoughts on life and death I felt really drawn into the story it has adventure but also a lot of deep thought provoking moments which really makes you think about the human existence. Dead men registers I won t delve too much into the plot because there is a lot going on and I don t want to spoil anything What I will say though is that it is surprising after reading the blurb I thought I had a fair idea of what to expect but there were a lot of things that happened that I wouldn t have seen coming. Dead men registers The characters were very well done It s hard to describe but Lou had this lovable clumsy underdog quality the kind of guy that these terrible things happen to but that seems to muddle through without much of an idea of how he s managing it Even if I hadn t been enjoying the story then I know I would have kept reading just to see if he gets a happy ending I liked his friendship with Neil and how you could get a really good sense of it even though their communication wasn t easy. Dead men registers The concept of death I found really intriguing it was different to anything I had read before but made a lot of sense to me I really liked his personification as well this almost childish innocence mixed with a world weary knowledge it was very cleverly done. Dead men registers If you are looking for a thought provoking humorous and surprising book then this is the one for you It s a story that clung to me a few days after reading and I am very much looking forward to seeing what Mr Cannizzaro comes up with next. Dead men registers Originally posted on everywhere and nowhere English Dead Men Naked is the best novel I ve read in while satisfying to the end All too often books with supernatural overtones veer into preposterous territory but not this one Author Dario Cannizzaro achieves a near perfect balance of realism and phantasm humor and melancholy the familiar and the uncanny It is an incredibly fun read about soul mates tequila occult incantations death and visions of a giant crow The somewhat flippant title derives from a poem by Dylan Thomas called And Death Shall Have No Dominion and indeed there are people in Dead Men Naked who seek passage beyond death s veil Cannizzaro says on his website that while writing this book he pestered people with talks about religion philosophy death for an incredible amount of time To get an idea of his background consider this quote from an article Cannizzaro wrote for The Galway Review in 2016 The author talks about skipping school with his friends at age 15 while living in in Italy We would go in the city center of Pozzuoli and hide into a dark alley In the alley there was a tattoo joint a hearing aid shop and a very small library called Il Nome della Rosa after Umberto Eco s book The Name of the Rose The owner Gino would entertain his guests with delicious comments about books poetry literature It wasn t long before we started spending our mornings there talking with Gino and drinking Espresso while watching the whirlwind of customers lost souls on the lookout for human connection writers poets mothers sons fishermen shop owners unemployed hippies the whole humanity passed in that library 20 to 30 square meters of enlightened soil much like the sacred ground of a secret church. Dead men registers Dead Men Naked reflects that mixture of ancient mystery and youthful curiosity The main characters Lou and Mallory seem like people I would hang out with for pizza and beer or in Louis case Tequila He only sees his friend s ghost while drinking tequila Tequila has a mystique unlike any of the other major alcoholic beverages A Huffington Post article presented by Patr n says In the mid 20th century tequila sales spiked after California residents thought it was a psychedelic They were just confusing mezcal with mescaline the psychoactive alkaloid of peyote Huffington Post Oct 06 2014 Over the years Jose Quervo has placed magazine ads that depict deeply surreal colorful sunsets over small gatherings of men and women smiling as though in states of altered consciousness with various taglines including It s all true and Anything can happen Special limited edition bottles display gold and silver mustachioed skulls One might argue that tequila s mystique is a fabrication but after all most magic is about what one believes to be true The universe is what you observe the Grim Reaper tells Lou Whatever you experience in your life you experience through your senses It s all real. Dead men registers We get a hint that maybe Mallory has seen beyond the veil too She has a collection of books on the occult and she knows how to use them Something weird happens resulting in Mallory s disappearance Hoping to find Mal at her sister s house Lou goes on a road trip with the Grim Reaper in the passenger seat to keep him company and call the shots They drive through a noir world of seedy bars until they find Mal s twin sister Angie Death takes either a holiday or a back seat when Angie joins Lou on a ride through the desert to an out of the way abandoned house where the girls once lived with their mother It is on this trip that Lou quotes the Dylan Thomas poem forming an emotional connection between the two in which there was no car no time no roadno faith no evil no sun no sea nothing but the nakedness of the word sliding from me to her and bouncing back from her eyes At the mother s house in the basement they find the books and notebooks evincing an in depth study of dreams mythology religion and Old Latin spells mixed up with Caribbean voodoo and African juju It gets weirder and better. Dead men registers There are so many good moments in Dead Men Naked it s impossible to discuss them all Worth mentioning are the beguiling passages about crows in chapter twenty two Around the world crows represent variously a trickster a harbinger of death a sign of transformation and depending on what direction they are flying the imminent approach of either your enemy or your true love The crows in this chapter punctuate Lou s action as they gather squawk and seemingly mock his angst with gawking open beaks It s a great image and better than I can describe it. Dead men registers I would like to mention one thing Perhaps you ve heard about writers who don t use quotation marks Cormac McCarthy comes to mind When interviewed in 2008 by Oprah Winfrey McCarthy warns other writers that if they plan to leave out quotation marks they really need to write in such a way as to guide people as to who s speaking I m here to tell you that Dario Cannizzaro pulls off this feat like an expert Trust me on this You will have no trouble understanding who is talking to whom in Dead Men Naked I highly recommend this book English I loved this story I mean I really loved this story I ll tell you why I loved it but I won t tell you much about the story itself This is one of those books you need to delve into without expectations and certainly without spoilers The story is unique both in the plot and in the way it s told This is not like any other book you ve read. Dead men registers The writing has a literary feel with beauty in the phrasing while also tossing in wry humor and remaining grounded This is not pretentious literary fiction that feels full of itself and intent of teaching us something This is a well written story that entertains and almost despite itself makes us think. Dead men registers While the story ventures into the supernatural and occasionally bizarre it also surprises with gems of profound insight A final note Cannizzaro does not use quotation marks around dialogue which is a literary style I occasionally see Honestly I m not a fan of this style and it typically drives me crazy as I m constantly wondering if a sentence is dialogue thought or narration Cannizzaro actually handles this method exceedingly well For the most part I had no issues with the absence of dialogue cues I still prefer quotation marks as they re a subtle cue that readers don t even notice until there are none and then we all notice But I understand the literary use or non use as its a cleaner style in appearance I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review English Dead Men Naked is a multilayered novel by a gifted writer Fans of Denis Johnson will love the on the road with my own Death journey the protagonist takes as he goes on a search that might possibly release him from a fatal curse The novel starts out with the main character and his companion nearly drinking themselves into oblivion His tequila nightmare starts with a zombie and a giant crow end in his best friend s death But it appears his best friend is not gone not entirely When he drinks tequila he can see him And somehow during a near death experience our protagonist discovers that he can actually see and speak with his own death One of my favorite lines And I went in first Neil said and there it was standing still black against the black and then it looked at me and it had no eyes and I felt it entering deep into me and I felt like someone s hand was squeezing me inside cracking my heart open. Dead men registers The strength of this novel is in its interweaving of the real world that is tracked through time a human invention and the world which is beyond the realm of mythological gods and goddesses creatures that serve as guides into uncharted realms What does it mean to die what is beyond our own death And what does it mean to cling to objects and people in this life A beautifully written insightful novel worth reading English Dead Men Naked is a brilliant piece of fantasy fiction with surrealist elements The story revolves around Louis an everyday guy who has just lost his near and dear friend Neil This leads him on to an adventure with a pair of twins and death himself. Dead men registers Despite reflecting on death and loss Dead Men Naked is a gentle reminder that there is positivity in these themes What happens after we die What happens when our loved ones die Does it matter if what I believe is different to what you believe For the most part Dead Men Naked is a really fun and easy read At no point did reading this story feel like a chore Having said that this is still a book of substance and it has a beautiful and original writing style I would recommend this book to fans of Terry Pratchett or David Lynch I say or as I haven t met many people who love both although I certainly do In fact you may be wondering how a book can remind me of both it has the wit and warmth of Pratchett and the surreal imagery of Lynch. Dead men registers Thanks to the author for a copy I was genuinely pleased with the read English Kind of like Winona Rider s character in Beetlejuice strange and unusual: Dead men registers The writing had a very easy style but the flowery and lyrical way with words that I admire from this author certainly shone through during any of the philosophical discussions, Dead men registers The characters are memorable Their personalities are quirky fun and realistic.Who are you gonna save the bird declares. All of them I reply. No you won t because you cannot save anyone but you.bernardjan.I m happy to report that it definitely does.https examiningtheodd.com 2017 09 1 English Dead Men Naked.
