This book is a beloved piece of fan fiction I buddy read it with 5 or 6 other people after seeing it recommended time and time again These recommendations were almost always glowing and effusive and turned out to be completely unhelpful Here s the thing about me If I m about to get run over by the Hogwarts Express I want to know about it so I can prepare myself None of the recommendations for this fic even mentioned in passing how many truly disturbing topics and issues this work has Some are introduced because of the overall structure of the plot e. Book The Debt of time by john g age power difference dynamics but some seem to be inadvertently included by the author with seemingly no awareness that what they have just written is messed up Hermione sexually assaulting Lily and Alice And unfortunately there seems to be a bit of a cult around this fic Any dissenting opinions on its strengths weaknesses or merits are quickly shut down and interpreted as aggression No one is allowed to express their thoughts about this fic unless it s to perpetuate the idea that it is perfect and is now canon Hermione may travel back to 1971 but fans of this particular work seem to have travelled back to 1984. Book The Debt of time by john Then Hermione travels back in time and rather than her plopping into existence when the Marauders were 17 or so and I wouldn t be revolted by the age dynamics she s dropped in when they re 11 and just about to head to Hogwarts Dumbledore gives her a magical potion which de ages her which is one POWERFUL potion since every other potion we have encountered in this world is acute acting and yet this one lasts for 8 years plot hole much So she s now the same age as the Maraudersexcept not mentally Despite the potion reverting her body back to its 11 year old configuration somehow her brain is immune to this Again an annoying plot hole She should not have any of those memories etc. EPub The Debt of times because all the synaptic connections in her brain should also reset And what s annoying is that if the author had just done this then it would have resolved one of the creepy power dynamics because then you wouldn t have a mentally 20 year old woman lusting after teenage boys I just could never get over that. EPub The Debt of times Somehow Mia becomes a vital member of their social circle quickly becoming Jamie s sister who accepts her with zero questions or reservations or jealousy Remus best friend and Sirius star crossed lover Their friendships and later romantic relationships are kind of creepy There s a lot of possessiveness our job gets beat to death toxic masculinity and just really gross lack of boundaries James becomes so irate when he finds out that Hermione has had sex that he transforms into his stag and stabs his two best friends after lamenting the loss of her maidenhead I guess this was supposed to be funny It just read as disgusting to me I like how Mia handles her own sexuality but everyone else s response to it is cringe inducing and made me dislike all these male characters that I m supposed to be rooting for. Book The Debt of time by john Then the romances begin I will admit that I am biased because I just do not see the appeal of Sirius Black He has always struck me as an impetuous self involved tool But then for some unbelievable reason the author then threw in a Remus Hermione pairing WHY They had already very firmly established the end game was Sirius Hermione so this superfluous pairing just felt like hundreds of page filler Then they break up and I m thinking we re going to get on with it butthen they get back together again At this point the author is just jerking my chain Especially since I actually liked the Remione pairing than Sirmione Remus and Hermione s relationship had some co dependent elements that I think were supposed to be cute like that they served each other breakfastthis drove one of the buddy readers to distraction that I was meh on but for the most point I could have gotten on board with that pairing I think Well until I read their first sex scene and wanted to skin myself because I felt like such a disgusting pervy creep that a shower didn t seem sufficient because I realized after reading a very explicit sex scene that they are only 15 and I was GROSSED OUT Not a feeling I was ready for because Lack of TagsThe author has chosen not to use archive warnings for this and that is their prerogative I get that maybe they don t want to give away key plot points but that actually worked against this fic because I was broadsided by the inclusion of so many problematic themes elements in this that I had never seen any mention of anywhere Here s a list of tags that this fic should really have Underage Major and Minor Character Death Domestic Abuse and Physical Violence Emotional Manipulation and Abuse Substance Abuse Child Abuse Attempted Murder and Suicide Miscarriage Dubcon Reproductive CoercionUnfortunately for me underage is one of the few tags that I am just NOPE As a 30 something woman I do not want to read explicit sex scenes featuring 15 year old children I just don t Some of these topics are handled really well others are treated really flippantly Dorea s death was heartbreaking and made me cry Charlus death was just breezed completely over I actually had missed that he d died since his name was just dropped at the end of a long list of victimsI had to go back and reread Some are jarring than others but one person s green light is another person s traumatic memory and everyone deserves to feel safe while reading. Book The Debt of timer I m not going into full details for all of the above issues but I think it s important to point out that many of them do not apply to villains of the story but rather to our heroine so I give you MiaIf this fic had just been about Sirius and Remus and an OC that they went to school with named Mia I would have been much on board with it But instead Hermione s character has been gutted from the inside so that the only thing that remains is the shell of her body Almost immediately from the time that Hermione travels back to 1971 in book 4 which will be its own section below there s even this little snippet She was adopted by a pureblood family you simpleton Draco said speaking very slowly as if talking to a child Harry bristled at the tone That makes her a pureblood. The Debt of Time booklet No but it changes their magical signature If a Familial Bond was created and sealed between her and her proud Potter parents then she s not just a Potter by name she might as well have been born to them Her magical signature was altered to adjust to her family By all Wizarding laws and rights she s a pureblood. Book The Debt of time by john Harry frowned That still doesn t make sense Her blood hasn t changed What the hell did we just fight a war over If it s about pure magic and not pure blood then why even bother talking about blood Not only does this take a huge turd on the entire motivating force of the main villain in the source material Voldemort should have just started an adoption agency but it also effectively aligns her with the side that claims magic is might Muggles are unimportant and can be expunged from one s history through adoption That s some elitist Kelpie crap that Hermione would never be supportive of. Book The Debt of time by john Mia in books 2 and 3 was never my favourite and she had some legitimately scary moments but for the most part I was okay with it At this point this was never going to be my favourite fic but I was hovering somewhere between 3 and 4 stars Then this Just because I m getting married does not mean I m about to turn into some barefoot and pregnant house witch Lily laughed at the thought I don t plan on starting a family for a few years. Book The Debt of time by john WHAT Mia is NOT an amazing friend She s an abuser She just stripped two of her friends of their bodily autonomy Lily EXPLICITLY stated she is not ready to have children and Alice is brewing the potion so it can be inferred that she is not wanting to become pregnant yet either but Mia completely disregarded their plans for their own body and sabotaged their contraception This is so over the line and I can t believe it was ever included The author could have handled this differently Lily and Alice could perhaps have gotten a little tipsy and messed up the potion or they could just not be brewing contraceptive potions in the first place But no the author chose to make our own heroine no better than a rapist. Book The Debt of time by john So nauseating in large doses Couldn t agree Book 4Honestly I don t know if I have the strength to go into this There is just SO MUCH about book 4 that is SO AWFUL that I just can t even deal Mia is now back in 1998 and all the characteristics of this OC that I found kind of mildly annoying in the previous 3 books are multiplied by 10 Mia is like a honey badger in this book Mia don t give a shit What Mia says goes Don t like it Sod off She steamrolls over every single character in this book and doesn t stop to consider anyone else s thoughts feelings or emotions She becomes physically violent and also attempts to get Sirius drunk so she can basically sexually assault him and all of this is apparently supposed to be adorable. Book The Debt of timer Putting aside that the author mentions multiple times over the course of the story that Sirius is immune to alcohol because of an incident where he drank himself into a coma years ago that s not how alcohol or immunity works these are not the behaviours of a healthy relationship Sirius and Hermione are SUPER TOXIC and yet they re supposed to be considered romantic in this fic I really hope nobody bases their RelationshipGoals on these two. The Debt of Time epubor And of course the ContraceptiveGate incident gets rehashed here because apparently I was truly evil in a past life and must now be punished Now EVERYBODY owes Mia a life debt You know because she s just so amazing This may be the most obnoxious example of a Mary Sue character I have ever encountered It is so heavy handed. Book The Debt of time by john And I can t forget Weasley bashing Wow Apparently Ron and Molly must have pissed in this author s Cheerios because they are presented as the scourge of the Earth in this book It comes out that Mia and Sirius have had a sexual history and Ron is understandably shocked and Molly is understandably angry since she s under the impression this has been going on for years making Sirius a statutory rapist She has a confrontation with Sirius which is a totally reasonable thing to do given that limited information right Nope apparently not Her and Ron are both written as if they are totally out of line and acting irrationally It is almost laughable how badly it is handled The author actually wrote an authentic and genuine feeling reaction to this news all the rest of the gang was basically like Golly gee Aint that grand and then tried to make them look crazy. The Debt of Time ebook free Several things happened very quickly the moment that Molly reached out to touch the baby her wand still in hand Sirius released Mia and in tandem Remus took hold of Tonks s arm as Mia retrieved Teddy from her hands The baby was shifted into Harry s arms as he was manoeuvred behind Mia Somehow Ginny was pulled into the mix as well until Molly stood with Ron alone at her side facing off against a werewolf and two Animagi protecting their own. Book The Debt of time by john I mean come on Why don t you just beat the reader over the head This was so over the top that I actually laughed out loud Oof and the Pack bondsif the solution to a plot problem isn t the Great and Wonderful Mia it s some sort of Bond Pack bond Soul bond Family bond Marriage bond or Life Debt It s the magical cure all for all your poorly constructed plot woes and Shayalonnie is the snake oil salesman Got a problem Just slap a bond on it I read her FAQs and she actually addresses this question choice Q What s with the Ron bashing A sigh Okay so here s the thing Ron comes into his own during Deathly Hallows After he leaves Harry and Hermione and eventually comes back it s Ron who kind of keeps up their spirits and forces the trio to move forward in the Horcrux hunt That didn t happen this time around because it was Sirius who was in charge So when Ron returned there was still just a lot of tension and Hermione and Harry both had Sirius So Ron didn t get his big grow up moment in one large dose It comes later over small bits and pieces after the war I m not bashing I m progressively forcing him to grow up by making Mia mean to him And at this point she is Mia than Hermione She is not still Ron s friend There s also the big issue where Ron is not Pack and as an Animagus who is very in touch with that part of her she s wary of people who aren t directly connected to her that way sigh Okay so here s the thing Being mean to someone does not encourage emotional growth or maturity it traumatizes people She seems to have fell into the trope that so many Hermione writers do thinking they need to trash Ron to justify them not being together You don t They were teenagers just say they broke up and remained friends Also she never treats Harry this way and he is guilty of all the same crimes that Hermione has condemned Ron for Oh but right the Pack bond is the answer to everything again Also by that sigh I assume this question gets asked a lot You know what If you re being asked the same question over and over and over again maybe you didn t write that aspect well Maybe the problem is with the material itself Just a thought. Book The Debt of time and money ConclusionI know that I ve highlighted a lot of things that I didn t like about the fic above and that is because I want to provide a counterbalance to all the blind praise this gets so other people don t go into it with over inflated expectations I did try to mention a few of the things that I liked that the author did above but there are others I can t remember the details of it now but I do remember thinking that she handled the Lupin Werewolf scene from PoA really wellsomething to do with the pack perhaps I m sorry I don t remember the specifics but I do remember thinking Oh that was clever The writing is technically VERY good Superb even There isn t an abundance of spelling and grammatical errors that you see in a lot of fanfic The writing style itself flows really well and if I strip out the message the words contains I would definitely say that this is one of the most beautifully written fics that I have ever read The time travel part was actually handled fairly well up to the end of book 3 It hung together in my head Unfortunately all the strings fell apart in book 4 and she made some inexplicable decisions that cast the whole premise of the book into uncertainty some people recognized her and some people didn t and it was so jumbled and the explanations made no sense If Shayalonnie had just maintained consistency and no one recognized Hermione as Mia I think I still could have bought into the time traveller thing I think she was really doubling down on the whole Pack Bond thing and it just didn t work for me Would I recommend it I m sure by now you would assume that I wouldn t but actually I might depending on the audience I would definitely add qualifiers onto the recommendation and give people a heads up about all the messed up themes in it though I would also say that you should skip book 4 entirely it s incomprehensibly bad Because here s the thing I didn t like it but up until the end of book 3 with the exception of the contraceptive potion I could see the appeal It may not be my cup of tea but I could definitely see why others would like it especially if you just decided to toss away your critical lens and ignore all the problematic elements. The Debt of Time booklet Or just read Turn because it s written just as technically well and doesn t have all the problematic stuff Shaya Lonnie Okay let s get it straight It IS a fanfiction It IS based on Harry Potter And it IS EPIC In some ways I DO prefer this story to a real canon one because no offences J. The Debt of Time kindle Rowling but Shaya just put it on some new freaking epic level Too many emotions it was too good and I just want to re read it at some point and cry all over again the tears of happy suffering Shaya Lonnie I was originally very excited to read this as it has been overwhelmingly positively reviewed and enthusiastically recommended Thus I was completely blindsided by how much I hated it by the end Technically this is very well written especially for a fanfiction and easy to read I will give the author major kudos for writing believable dialogue and the sex scenes are good although they may squick you out a bit due to the age differences and they did get a bit repetitive All of these pros made it easy to be lulled into the fiction that the plot was good and characterizations are on point It isn t and they weren t Mia is not Hermione This is the overarching problem that I had with this fic If Mia had been an OC I don t think I would have hated this fic as much After Book 1 every characterization good and bad of Hermione was stripped away and her character was replaced by Mia a textbook Mary Sue Despite having nothing in common besides being a female and relatively smart the fic kept trying to hammer me over the head with the idea that Hermione and Mia were the same person They are not I like Hermione I HATE Mia Mia is an insufferable caricature of a cool girl whose antics I assume were meant to be cute but were actually indicators of a toxic controlling steamroller of a person So if Mia was an OC and not meant to be Hermione would I like this book Nope but I wouldn t know it until I was already past the halfway point Near the end of Book 2 Mia intentionally tampers with Lily and Alice s birth control potion which results in both of them getting pregnant despite explicitly stating that they were not ready for kids This is reproductive coercion and it s gross and unforgivable and can be triggering so thanks for the warning Oh wait the author refuses to use them Mia our erstwhile heroine is now basically a rapist who remains blithely unaware that she s a creep No thanks Books 1 and 3 are basically rehashes of the canon books with the time travel and Sirius being alive thing thrown in They re fine One of the few instances of Tonks Remus that I like I really wanted to like Book 2 because I love reading about the Marauders Era but James is completely mischaracterized her magical adoption makes no sense and it focuses on Mia Remus for far too long Edit that shit I know Mia and Sirius are end game so I m not investing in these other relationships And then the birth control thing happened and that was that Book 4 is Mia at her most insufferable Mary Sue self Basically Mia singlehandedly revamps all of wizarding society while using her so called friends as pawns and she may have killed Umbridge but that s just dropped as a throw away line and never mentioned again She arranges marriages for all of her friends and for people who she barely even knows and her friends get no say on the matter She s a pure blood now because sure The Weasley bashing is off the charts and feels very out of place when every other relationship has been imbued with a special bond Oh and if Harry s told you once he s told you a thousand times Mia stop fucking Sirius in the common areas of Grimmauld Place Other people live there and not forgetting time turners I honestly will writer a better indepth review later for now quotes will do P.
