Lucy Tries Hockey By Lisa Bowes
2018 Lisa Bowes This story is about a Canadian girl named Lucy who tries out hockey I literally loved everything about this book Kids always love when a book rhymes and this book delivers It would be a great book to use when teaching rhyming to students I love the storyline and how the main character was a girl who tries out hockey The majority of books about hockey have a male main character so it was fantastic to see one with a girl The pictures in this book were excellent and I love how the text complimented the pages This book would definitely hold students attention and I can t wait to share it with my class Lisa Bowes Lucy is out skating on the pond one day with her family and discovers some kids playing hockey Excitedly she asks her parents if she could try playing too They respond Of course We support what you do They connect her with a reputable hockey coach and sign her up to learn introductory skills in the sport She of course needs to have the proper gear to wear to ensure her safety on the ice She is super excited to join the other hockey hopefuls as they warm up.
Back when I was a kid before Title 9 in the United States girls were not encouraged to play sports because well it was for men I guess We could be cheerleaders or play individual sports such as tennis and golf but none of that teamwork stuff. So this book about a little girl wanting to play hockey is apparently one in a series of books about Lucy being interested in a sport and getting to play it As you can see by the picture below the colors are bright the text is easy to read and Lucy is having a lot of fun. I love that it is perfectly normal in this book for a little girl to want to play hockey and no one to make a big fuss about her being a girl What a great way to introduce girls and boys to this book also encourages kids to try new things The target readership of the LUCY TRIES SPORTS series is children ages 4 to 8 During these formative years children are very impressionable This makes it the ideal age to instill in children a love of sports and of being active Illustrator James Hearne has done an incredible job of creating a character that is cute but not cutesy that is girlish but not girly and one that is easily recognizable This means that the LUCY TRIES SPORTS books will stand out from all other children s books The bright colors and clean lines of the illustrations enhance the story with perfection I rate LUCY TRIES HOCKEY as 5 out of 5 Stars and I will be purchasing copies of every book in this series to give as Christmas presents this year The bonus to the fact that this is an amazing book is the fact that the author is Canadian and I love to support Canadian talent Thank you to NETGALLEY for providing me with a free copy of this amazing children s book Lisa Bowes Lucy and her parents are skating on the pond when they see some kids playing hockey Lucy is excited and asks her parents if she can play hockey They say yes and sign her up with a group of children learning how to play hockey with a great coach She gets all the equipment she needs to be safe and learns the drills including warming up speed up hopping lines touching their knees and so on as well as shooting the puck and puck handling She loves it especially when she gets the puck in the net This is a wonderful book to encourage kids to get involved in sports whether it is a traditional male or female sport With so many women and girls playing hockey now it was great to see a book about this sport geared to girls It is written in rhyming cadence and the illustrations enrich the text greatly This book is a winner A great book to be in home class school and public libraries The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley Lisa Bowes This is a fun picture book about a young girl learning to play hockey The pictures are bright and colorful and I appreciate that the children in the book have many skin tones The text is rhyming and incorporates hockey terms This is going to be the perfect gift for my niece Lucy I received an ARC from NetGalley The book will be released on September 18 speed up hop lines touch their knees fall forward properly practise tricky stick handling and shoot the puck into the net just to name a few It s hard work but everyone that participates loves the challenges set before them Will Lucy s enthusiasm continue as she goes through the many drills and learns the appropriate rules of the game Can she be successful at this new sport and find it exhilarating and fun Will she make new friends that she can play hockey with too after her training is complete This wonderful inspirational book encourages kids to get involved in sports and to get outside and play It is written in rhyme and the illustrations enrich the text greatly Kids love team sports and getting them involved can literally change not only their health but build their self confidence and self worth too This book SCORES BIG Lisa Bowes Lucy Tries Hockey by Lisa BowesIllustrations by James HearnePublisher Orca BooksISBN 9781459816947Publish Date September 18 2018Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Orca Books for the ebook ARC of Lucy Tries Hockey by Lisa Bowes and illustrated by James Hearne in exchange for an honest review. I wish Lucy had struggled a little bit in at least one part of the first practice She seems like a natural and I m doubting that would reflect most kids first day of hockey practice I get that the goal of the book is to just introduce various skills that hockey players use and what a practice might be like so it does do that Recommended to littles interested in hockey or who like sports books Lisa Bowes When Lucy is ice staking with her family she sees a hockey game going on and decides she s like to try playing hockey Enrolling in a hockey clinic Lucy starts learning hockey basics and has fun playing a new sport.
