I think this is such a great and helpful book All the training sections are so helpful I only read through it But look forward to working through some of the questions and the BA myself in the not too distant future 192 Practical insights from an experienced sourceThe content of TNEH was very well put together The author gave helpful and informative steps on how to put his content to use It is my hope that our church will benefit from the helpful insights and practical wisdom imparted through this good book 192 Great resource for pastors elders and those who aspire to the office Book is essentially a practical program to work through the process of testing evaluating training elders The content is equally valuable for standard discipleship Authors have a very high view of Scripture and the church Book has a great bibliography and tons of helpful and wise reading recommendations In some ways the book is akin to a curriculum 192 If the church of Jesus Christ is to grow and prosper it needs leaders.

Recruit and train elders This work is his pastoral response to the challenge of preparing elders and serves as a guide both to pastors seeking to train potential elders and to men who aspire to serve in that capacity The New Elders Handbook is divided into three parts The first part considers vision The authors consider the biblical qualifications for elders and look at the life of Ezra as an example of godly power In chapter three they move to basic principles of spiritual growth and then follow with a significant chapter of the role of the Christian community in the training of elders and why the community is so important The first section concludes with a chapter on the qualities to look for in potential elders and how to identify and recruit them Although the heart of the book is the second section on training.

Men who will serve as elders and shepherd the flock of God But where can they be found The church can t just count on seminary graduates who need long term financial support to lead the flock of God If the church is to go forward it needs a host of ordinary men who will serve as elders without formal training or financial support But where are those men Greg Scharf and Arthur Kok believe they are in your church and if you are a pastor you must train them to shepherd the people of God Greg Scharf and Arthur Kok The New Elder s Handbook A Biblical Guide to Developing Faithful Leaders Grand Rapids Baker 2018 Greg Scharf is a professor of Homiletics at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Dr Scharf wrote the majority of this book which grows out of his experience at an Evangelical Free Church in Fargo ND There professor Scharf faced the question of how to identify this part provides an important foundation for such training For pastors who have not thought a lot about developing elders for their churches these chapters point them in the right direction For those pastors who have Scharf and Kok provide an excellent and readable summary of what sometimes is disjointed reflexion on how to find and form leaders for the local church It is in the second section of the book which is just one chapter that those who desire to train elders will probably find the most help Here we find Greg Scharf s 75 questions that he has used to prepare men for the privilege of serving as local church elders These questions are intended to address the three dimensions of the development of the emerging leaders mind head character heart and abilities to serve hands and come with biblical texts to be explored and resources for further study Men in the training program prepare on their own and then come together to share what they have learned The final part of the book provides two additional resources which are intended for use with individuals or very small groups Both are intended to provide practical guides for discipling others The first is a thematic study for following Jesus while the second is a plan based on a consecutive study of 2 Peter Both guides are built around a series of questions I found the study through Second Peter especially intriguing because it enables a new believer to develop the ability of working all the way through a book of the Bible For pastors who desire to train emerging elders and for men who think that the Lord might be calling them to that great work it is hard to overrate the value of this book Born out of actual experience in shepherding men toward this great task it captures both the magnificence of the ministry of developing elders and the reality of the challenge of doing so with men who are living with a variety of demands and expectations on their lives It is certainly a book that pastors who value training leaders will want to explore As with any book of this nature there are some things that a reader might see differently Some pastors will probably want to substitute alternative questions for some of the 75 that are there I would have liked to see the additional resources for study include a broader range of texts drawn from the rich theological history of the church So for example the works of Gregg Allison and Wayne Grudem show up a number of times in the 75 questions but towering figures from church history like Augustine and Calvin are never mentioned character and convictions The final section provides an invaluable discipleship recourse to be used to raise of biblical informed believers. Elders training manual pdf If you re looking for a resource to help provide a strategy for raising up new leaders in your church this book would be a great resource If your a new pastor elder this would be a great resource for personal study. New elder's handbook book pdf VisionThe first part sets forth the biblical qualifications for the office of elder Scharf and Kok refuse to cut corners here In a clear and meticulous fashion they spell out what Scripture demands Doctrinal accuracy is indispensable for elders but it is not enough to preserve the health of the church Truth must shape life and the truth must be taught to others Elders are called upon in Scripture to be men of character knowledge and skill This model is the framework or template that allows elders to see how close they match the biblical expectations The authors argue that truth must be faithfully transferred The best way to keep the gospel safe is to faithfully teach it to those who are equally able to teach it to others Ezra is set forth as an example of a godly man who grows spiritually as he subjects himself to the Word of God and immerses himself in prayer and is guided by the Holy Spirit Such is the life of a biblically qualified elder. New elder's handbook kindle review TrainingPart two focuses on seventy five questions for new or prospective elders Carefully thought out and biblical responses are offered along with pertinent resources to help candidate mature in their character knowledge inspired by Scripture for the person aspiring to be an Elder in the church The book opens with some basic descriptive of the book s purpose and then launches into the qualities of being an Elder Part 2 is where this book has its greatest value though Scharf and Kok offer a comprehensive study for those thinking about becoming an Elder in the church This study explores basic doctrine church discipline and the role of the Elder It would benefit many people to study through section 2 with another believer in Christ Section 3 rounds out the text by providing some further tools for discipleship The role of any Elder is that of a person who disciples others This book provides a means to do this Other than some minor polity differences I find this book very usable for the contemporary church I received this book as part of Baker Books Blogging program 192
