Eil s Dillon 1920 1994 was born in Galway in the West of Ireland Her father Thomas Dillon was Professor of Chemistry at University College Galway Her mother Geraldine Plunkett was the sister of the poet Joseph Mary Plunkett one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic who was executed in Kilmainham Gaol at the end of the 1916 Easter Rising Eil s was educated at the Ursuline Convent in Sligo and was sent to work in the hotel and catering business in Dublin In 1940 at the age of 20 she married a 37 year old Corkman Her husband Cormac Cuillean in became Professor of Irish at University College Cork Eil s had always written poetry and stories and in the intervals of bringing up three children and running a student hostel for the university she developed her writing into a highly successful professional career At first she wrote children s books in Irish and English then started to write novels and detective stories Over twenty of her books were published by Faber and Faber winning critical acclaim and a wide readership Her work was translated into fourteen languages. The Fort of Gold epub.pub With a charming Irish lilt to the prose and a wonderful glow to the characters this book set on the Irish island of Inishdara is outstanding The plot is tight and well developed and the narrative is splashed with humor excitement and ideas Michael the narrator Roddy and Johnny are three spirited youths who uncover tainted Spanish gold from the ruins of an old fort But the discovery must be kept a secret for superstition decrees that the gold will unleash evil spirits on the island The boys dive deeper into intrigue when they are forced to assist a band of thieves in a search for the same gold The factions tangle the islanders enter and the boys the gold and the island are all saved A delightful combination of logic superstition and intrigue tied together by a cleverly conceived plot The Fort of GoldSlow start but a good story with some unexpected twists The specific island of Inishdara is fictional and it is not one of the Aran Islands but we are in that general vicinity The local flavor is strong and the dialogue particularly contributes to that I didn t find the ending so satisfying because I felt that Dillon left at least two loose ends untied first the fine melodeon of David Kelly and second the fact that Peter Cramm did not know Irish These aren t necessarily major flaws but as things were winding down and the conflict was entering its endgame they remained on my mind I was just hoping that the author would get back to these earlier references It seems that Dillon s books tend to focus on a few themes islands horses treasure I enjoy her writing and will explore when I m in the mood for of the above.
