The Dhow House memoir Summer 2017 Book 15 328 I really struggled with this one Rebecca Laurelson is an English Doctor serving at an East African field hospital where there is conflict from Islamist terrorists When Rebecca is forced to leave this post for reasons that are not made clear but lead the reader to believe are relevant to the unrest in the country she arrives at the home of her Aunt on the coast of the Indian Ocean Now Rebecca does not really know her aunt Julia who none the less welcomes her into her home The descriptions of this open air environmentally friendly home are very well written It was easy to imagine myself as an unseen guest being shown the lay of the land In fact all the scenes depicting the wildlife and landscapes of Africa are brilliant effectively transporting the reader to another land It is here at her Aunt s home that Rebecca meets Julia s son Storm Rebecca is several years Storm s senior not to mention his first cousin but despite all that she is drawn to him and it is at this point as McNeil begins to explore the relationship between these two that things began to unravel for me. The show house dubai And it wasn t all about the incestuous nature of the relationship either It was all just too icky sweet and melodramatic not at all the way one would expect an older and seasoned cousin to behave The focus on this romance happening right under her Aunt s nose yet without her knowledge quickly becomes the main thrust of the story which moves back and forth in time suggesting without really revealing why Rebecca was forced to leave her field hospital and as the terrorist attacks move even closer to her Aunt s house it becomes clear that Rebecca has knowledge about this conflict than she is sharing with her family If this review sounds sketchy all I can say in my defence is so did the entire book There were times when I actually went back and reread previous sections because the narrative had jumped and I was left struggling to find my place again in the story. Jean McNeil is a prolific fiction and non fiction author The Dhow is Jean s seventh publication The Dhow house is a novel about forbidden passion and terrorism on the Indian ocean coast of east Africa The majority of place names in this novel do not exist The names for ethnicities and political factions are also fictitious However the bird animal and tree species named are generally those found in coastal or upland East Africa The story of a once privileged family its passion safeties and neglects and forbidden love in dark times Jean McNeil is an award winning author with a huge on line readership I think that any one who has links with East Africa would like reading this novel 328 A novel set in a fictional East African country in recent history During a time of upheaval a female surgeon is contracted to work in a field hospital treating locals and insurgents and also to collect information to pass on to an unnamed secret service.
