Milwaukee was home to the Great Circus Parade for almost 30 years Beginning in 1963 and continuing until 1972 the parade became an annual tradition except in 1967 when the event was cancelled because of civil unrest Revived on a smaller scale in 1980 the parade traveled between Baraboo and Chicago until it returned to Milwaukee in 1985 Each year it grew in size and scope gaining national prominence The old fashioned circus parade became an event of mammoth proportions requiring an army of volunteers working behind the scenes Staging the Great Circus Parade Images of Modern America 
The first Great Circus Parade stepped off in 1963 on July 4th so this turned into a timely weekend for a look at this quick book A hundred years ago a hundred circuses made their home in Wisconsin The parade is a turn of the century experience in a time before movies radio and television The Circus World Museum opened in 1957 Six years later the parade began an annual series through downtown Milwaukee eventually covered by PBS The last parade took place in 2009 Exotic animals and seventy circus wagons strutted their colorful stuff for children of all ages This is a collection of personal photographs and anecdotes which gives a feels for making the spectacle happen Time marches on Without frequent practice the teamsters wranglers and others who made this happen get rusty It s been seven years Last I heard the parade costs about a million dollars and the train costs another million dollars That s just two million dollars for a terrific event Meanwhile a new crop of kids come up every year who need to experience a deluxe circus parade and all of its peripheral events I enjoyed the parade several times mostly recently in 2009 For my vantage point I chose a spot where the parade director paced and wove each element including the bands wagons and elephants I stood at the vortex as these colorful and disparate elements fused into one solid experience on a warm sunny day The units merged into a parade at the bottom of a bluff at Veterans Park on Lake Michigan From there everyone marched up the incline then turned onto Wisconsin Avenue I was especially thrilled and even moved when the big red circus band wagon drawn by its horses majestically climbed the incline and made its turn all the while with its costumed band members playing circus music A colorful and tuneful memory Staging the Great Circus Parade Images of Modern America
