Mixed Signals By Diane Barnes

I can see how one would want to shake Jillian and tell her to stop being so stupid I felt that way also That was until I started to think about it A lot of woman in the face of a break up have done the exact same thing or worse We can t judge because we have all been there in some shape or form There are things we have said and done that we wish we could take back but the damage is done It was not different for Jillian Nico on the other hand I had an instant dislike for I think that is the way the reader is supposed to feel so Barnes did a good job with this character Could you imagine hanging out with this guy in real life It would be a major snooze fest I doubt someone like him would make it to the 2nd date with me let alone the six years with Jillian Then there is Ben The Bradley Cooper look alike who is onboard with people watching and making up stories about their lives It was love at first read with him Not to mention that he was honorable and kind and funny It was clear from the get go what his feelings for Jillian were This is a story about what happens when things don t turn out the way you thought you wanted or planned and you travel down the road of the unknown Sometimes things be be a heck of a lot entertaining.

Mixed signals book com or on Twitter and Instagram DianeBarnes777 site_link Engaging and amusing Diane Barnes channels our inner insecure selves when she brings us inside Jillian s thoughts and feelings Diane knows her characters inside and out and portrays them as a mother does her children genuinely with all their foibles and character Her prose is smart and crisp and engaging We watch Jillian to let go of her past and find what she seeks We re happy in the end that she gets what she needs after she lets go of what she thinks she wants 1616507918 Review also found at received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review The expected publication date is September 27th 2016 This is the second story I have read by Barnes having enjoyed her previous work I thught I would give this one a chance I will start with my constructive criticism first to get it out of the way This comes down to personal opinion however there were times throughout this story that I struggled with it being written in the first person It made some parts a little awkward such as when Jillian was describing her and I may misquote it her super tones legs and arms It came of egotistical because she was describing herself This was my biggest struggle the rest was good While reading this story just as this book was 1616507918 The humor aspect really made me want to read the book because having your breakup broadcasted on a really well known morning show is hilarious horrible but hysterical I read the book and I laughed quite a bit because it was absolutely ridiculous but I didn t love the book The romance meant to build and take place just really didn t for me It kind of came out of left field and hit me in the temple I felt dazed and like What the fuck just happened Overall it wasn t a bad read but the focus was too much on the ex rather than the guy she s supposed to end up with which means very little building 1616507918 The subtle sly and often wry humor in Diane Barnes MIXED SIGNALS is a delight Mind you Barnes humor is not the laugh out loud slapstick of a Janet Evanovich book Rather it is a astute intelligence life in all its ups and down ironic sort of humor Beyond that let me say this Barnes can write She has a clear sharp writing style and an eye for the telling details that make for a rich satisfying read While I doubt I m within the target audience I truly enjoyed reading MIXED SIGNALS The book kept me intrigued and proved to be as much of a page turner as the mysteries I often read Anyone who has been dumped and that s probably pretty much all of us can relate to the protagonist Jillian and her tale of woe and transcendence This is a breakup story for sure but one with a clever twist Jillian s boyfriend Nico and his arrogance boss are hosts of a morning sports radio show To boost ratings Nico and his boss decide to make Jillian and the break up part of the show Increasingly Jillian is the target of some rough invasive and decidedly unfair radio chatter In other words there is no privacy in the break up and the radio show hosts increasingly humiliate Jillian Jillian doesn t slink away though she wants to but rather grows from the experience Part of her growth is her recognition of the complexity and value of her grumpy 70 something landlord a widower Barnes talent is also evidence in her treatment of the landlord She shows us the man s character in a series of scenes where the man s actions speak louder than any narrative description could If as our creative writing workshops tell us good writing is show don t tell Barnes nails it I won t say too much in case I spoil the plot But Barnes makes the readers care for Jillian and to cheer for her and to keep reading to see what will happen to her next Though not within the obvious target audience I m glad I saw the promotion and read the positive Kirkus Review and purchased MIXED SIGNALS And I m certainly glad I read the book You probably will be too 1616507918 ARC requested through Netgalley and kindly provided by Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review. Book Mixed signals intelligence I thoroughly enjoyed this story Categorized a romance I would argue this book was about grieving the life you thought you would be living and then finding happiness in yourself Romance played a part in Jillian s story but there was so much to her journey The reader got to see the messy aftermath of what happens when the rug is ripped out from under your perfectly constructed happily ever after. Mixed Signals booking Jillian Atwood was in complete denial as the story started off Her boyfriend of over six years and fiancee of less than a month Nico had dumped her without explanation and moved out She was convinced it was a case of cold feet and didn t want anyone knowing about it believing it would all blow over And so began her journey of dealing with the reality of the break up. Mixed signals mean I found it very telling as Jillian made her way through the story how many memories clearly illustrated why her and Nico might not have been as great a match as she had believed When it came to Nico Jillian only saw the good though Part of this came from learning to love him good and bad But I think a bigger part of this came from outside pressure from society family and friends You aren t getting any younger Better find someone now or you will be alone If you want kids you can t waste any time This was the theme of the messages she was getting from everyone around her This has always driven me crazy because subscribing to this way of thinking means your happiness will always be out of your control and dependent on another person What happens if you don t meet someone Does this mean you aren t deserving of feeling happiness Jillian s friends and family were guilty of pushing Jillian towards a feeling of panic first in settling for Nico though she didn t see it that way and then in trying to get her to date again because after all she wasn t getting any younger It truly interfered with her ability to first grieve for the loss of the relationship Six years is a long time and a breakup after this amount of time can sometimes feel similar to someone dying I didn t like how her friends and family kept pushing her to date again instead of giving her the support she needed to start feeling happy without Nico. Book Mixed signals On the surface Jillian seemed to be oblivious to what was best for her Well into the book despite her anger towards Nico she kept imagining scenarios where Nico would come back and her eventually taking him back I did get frustrated with her at times wanting her to come to her senses but these things do take time When you believe your life is going to go one way it can take time to readjust your view on what your life will be. Book Mixed signals There was an added layer of stress added to the story in the form of a sports radio show that Nico produced airing all of Jillian s dirty and private laundry on the air for laundry I cringed through a lot of it and felt so bad for Jillian I kept waiting for her to stand up for herself Great story 1616507918
