I used to spend every Friday night curled up with my Grandma watching the late night horror movies on TV Most folks who grew up in the 80 s could tell you that these movies were the great old classics and some of the cheesier newer ones I still remember the feeling I had as I watched Steve McQueen save the day in The Blob Glenn Rolfe s writing in Boom Town is so vibrant it took me right back to the horror I felt watching that slimy ooze slither across the screen in a dark room Brady and Kim are wonderfully drawn characters I thoroughly enjoyed following their thrilling and terrifying journey as they tried to solve the mystery of what was causing The Booms in their small town I couldn t wait to find out what happened next and at the same time I didn t want to know because that would mean the end of this marvelous novella Horror and Sci fi lovers everywhere will want to grab this 5 star read Glenn Rolfe

Damn Already a fan of Rolfe Where Nightmares Begin deepened my adoration for this top notch author There is something for everyone within these delightful morsels A true must read even if horror is not your usual genre Glenn Rolfe It must be difficult being the other horror writer from Maine but Glenn Rolfe showcases enough confidence and diversity of ideas in this tight collection of novellas that proves he can stand out Where Nightmares Begin collects two previously published novellas Abram s Bridge and Boom Town with his current release Things We Fear I was anxious to read something of Glenn s since a lot of people were talking about his werewolf novel Blood And Rain As always the novella is a great place to start. Where nightmares beginn new Boom Town is worth the price of admission alone It made me mist up reminiscing about the sticky plastic encased sci fi sleazoid VHS tapes I used to stack up on and blaze through A pure eco yucko thriller with a blue goo terrorizing a town full of characters who can stomach large quantities of Pabst Blue Ribbon Arising from a mystery involving several explosive noises heard over the landscape Boom Town is ripe for a full treatment to expand its cuckoo concept Go give Glenn five million so he can make the movie please Thank you. Where Nightmares Beginq again My second favorite in the collection is Abram s Bridge a quiet thoughtful homespun thriller about Lil Ron a child from questionable origins who seeks out the companionship of a young girl he discovers by the nearby falls He quickly realizes the young girl isn t quite alive enough to share a Slurpee so he goes on a mission to discover her killer The pacing and the characters shine here with some nice tension My only issue here is the quick roll credits ending The action at the end shouldn t be the defining moments for the characters Things We Fear is where the book falls apart a bit for me Starting off with a murder in which the killer is revealed to be the sleazy jock teacher Matt Holmes makes the rest of the story alongside the sweet summery relationship between Aaron Jackson and Emily Young a basic wait and see what he ll do thriller Thankfully outside of the setup there is the beautiful setting of Old Orchard Beach sympathetic characters working out their own viable fears together and a truly surprising ending Glenn Rolfe showcases an ease in his storytelling and his writing never feels like he s repeating himself so it s safe to say his output is well worth looking into and I m eager to see where he goes from here Glenn Rolfe Great collection of 3 novellas Abram s Bridge was an excellent and sad ghost story Definitely the highlight of the collection Glenn Rolfe Where Nightmares Begin is a collection of Glenn Rolfe s Samhain Novellas Abram s Bridge Boom Town and Things We Fear and they are very good My thoughts On Abram s Bridge In Abram s Bridge Glenn Rolfe gives us his readers a solid tense and borderline heart breaking tale With a dash of paranormal ghost story a pinch of small town mystery and a second helping of suspense Mr Rolfe s delivers a winner for his first release through Samhain Horror Publishing a go to publishing company for horror Glenn has a knack for writing entertaining and likable and fun to dislike characters And the dramatis personae in Abram s Bridge is no exception There s a lot of grey area for this cast to play around in flowing in and out of the murk as you the reader try to get a feel for what s going on I dug our main character Lil Ron quite a bit as I am a big fan of the terror through the eyes of children youths brand of storytelling And the dynamic with his alcoholic father and grandmother was pretty spot on authentic and quite relatable I saw a lot of myself in Ron as a lot of his family dysfunction mirrors my own youth I felt connected to him and concerned for his well being And it s not the only strong dynamic in the book All of the characters here are connected by a highly taut thread just one pull is all it takes to start the fray And once the fray starts the lines begin to snap. Epub where nightmares begin free download At the end of the day Abram s Bridge delivers a top notch coming of age yarn heart felt from page one and culminating in a tense and powerful climax On Boom Town Boom Town is quick and highly entertaining read that harkens back to the 1980 s brand of small town or intimate invasion alien pieces Like a readers digest version of Late Night Horror Television presentations every region had one for me it was Fright Night Theatre of Invaders From Mars Invasion of the Body Snatchers Night of the Creeps or Xtro Making it easy to picture these characters as a Jason Lively a Tom Atkins a James Karen a Donald Sutherland or a Hunter Carson It oozes an old school vibe that I love It immediately brought back the nostalgic horror of being left home alone as a young lad six maybe seven watching a sci fi horror flick on TV My caregiver was only gone for a short while but long enough for me to be terrified by the scene of a woman giving cesarean birth on her kitchen floor to a full grown man much later I tracked the title down Xtro My aunt returned home to find me sitting on my knees in front of the TV white knuckled grasping a fireplace poker That scene haunts me to this day and I have been a fan of horror and sci fi horror ever since. Where nightmares begint time I m also a big fan of through the eyes of the children young adults horror Adult tales of kids caught in the crosshairs and carrying the burden as the adults succumb to the terrors and become the terror With said evil unfurling around these youthful characters while they are blossoming searching for their own place in this world and finding themselves enveloping into the world of others Such as Dan Simmons Summer of Night Stephen King s The BodyAnd Boom Town has that youthful exploration vibe in spades Growing up early friendships becoming burgeoning love and overwhelming loss Weather or not you ve planned the time for it Boom Town will be a one sitting read On Things We Fear Do you know a Matt I think everyone knows a Matt at some point in their lives You know that guy it s usually a guy the lurker He s never there until he is then he s everywhere anytime Raising your hackle sure he s smiling but that smile makes your skin crawl Everyone knows a Matt sometimes YOU are MattThings We Fear is a solid fun read A sitting in the sunshine sipping on an iced tea or cold brew romp It s the most recent shocker from Glenn Rolfe an exciting writer who has a lot to offer the genre to offer the reader Of the new brat pack of horror writers I d consider him a favorite He brings the mayhem he brings the chills but most importantly he brings an old school style the resonates with me It s a vibe that reminds me of how I felt when I was getting into horror The first time I delved into a King title the first Simmons McCammon reads I feel the same kind of energy when I crack the digital spine of the a Rolfe joint Things We Fear is no different. Ebook where nightmares begin to happen This is a character driven piece a man is the real monster type of read The cast inhabiting this world are charming and flawed but identifiable flaws bringing a real world feel And although I d love to get to know these people better they do a fine job and propelling the story Then there s Matt he s a slimy bastard Unsettling and creepy you feel trapped every moment he s on the page Which compliments a deftly euphoric sense of summertime freedom just before picking away at your inner torments Oh yeah then there s the violent brutality Plenty of that The narrative breezes through at a brisk pace and shanks to the left when you think you might know where it going I would have liked to spend time with these characters To get a better feel for them and their world Especially Matt I d love to know about his youth All in all Things We Fear is a really good read. When the nightmares started It is my hope that Rolfe s writing will stretch the boundaries of what people think of as horror like that other guy from Maine Rolfe s stories are part mystery and part thriller with a lot of suspense and even a little romance in the mix There are some beautiful turns of phrase in Rolfe s work and even though the endings sometimes challenged my suspension of disbelief this was a fun difficult to put down read and I enjoyed every second Glenn Rolfe I feel as though I should be allowed to give this fifteen stars since I would give each of the short stories a five I also feel it s only fair to tell what I liked about each story most Abram s Bridge is just an overall beautiful ghost story Gratuitous violence certainly has its place in horror but Glenn is full of depth and an excellent storyteller This is what ghost stories should be full of regret and secrets and not always ending happily for everyone Ghosts aren t the only things that will haunt us our mistakes will be sure to as well Boom Town is quite the unorthodox alien story but is written vividly and leaves many questions swimming about I am honestly hoping it evolves into a in depth story but even if left as it is there s no questioning its ability to give one chills Things We Fear was actually my favorite as I am a fan of stories that draw attention to the human capacity to be monsters in our own right The greatest things in life to fear are personal varying for all of us and perhaps some of us haven t truly discovered what we fear the most We haven t yet met the monster in our lives or encountered the monster within ourselves Glenn Rolfe Where Nightmares Beginis a collection of three novellas one of which I d previously read I ve also read Mr Rolfe s short novel Blood and Rain which I enjoyed so I was happy to try out this collection when it came up for review at Horror After Dark Abram s Bridge This is the novella I read previously However I noticed some improvements in the writing since my original read so my rating has changed This is a ghost revenge story with a gritty cast of characters fast pacing and a satisfying denouement 3.
