Science fiction fantasy beltrunner characters Beltrunner is an ok story about a man who gets the most game breaking artifact that apparently has no inherent drawbacks except when Collier refuses to conform to society and give it up I don t really feel compelled to read any sort of follow up to Beltrunner which is less to do with the plot and to do with Collier. Beltuner groupe Collier is probably the grossest protagonist I ve read He meets three named women throughout the story and really the first thing you get from that is a description of their bodies while the men receive no such treatment Collier has sexual relations with two of these women dismissing the third as being unappealing He assumes that both women are using their sexuality to trick him Worst of all is his complete inability to deal with hermaphraditism He tries to slot everyone he meets into an assigned gender role and doesn t even attempt to understand the society There are no negative repercussions to his actions and biaseswhich makes for a very unappealing character and world. Science fiction fantasy beltrunner series I might read a follow up if it stars any other character but I am done with Collier and his inability to understand anyone else s worldview Beltrunner Book One in the Beltrunner Saga Caution This review is mildly spoileriffic _Beltrunner_ is an unassuming book a fairly straightforward sci fi story set among the asteroids of our own solar system It has an unmistakably retro feel to it in a good way in my opinion as if it were a product of a bygone age of futurism As an adventure story it s fine What s interesting is what the story eventually has to say about individualism Captain Collier our hero is himself a throwback to an earlier age stubbornly eking out a living as an independent miner in a world that like ours is becoming increasingly consolidated into large and largely uncaring corporations He finds his independence and individualism threatened on two fronts On the one hand the corporate miners find him a thorn in their side and would love to remove him from the picture on the other hand he encounters the Ganymede society where individuality is suppressed by force if necessary in service to an extreme form of collectivism Even retaining one s sex is frowned upon Collier s reaction to both these forces in thought and action is worth considering. Blt runners Sadly the intriguing device that Collier discovers early on proves to be a mere McGuffin I had expected it to play a pivotal role in the direction of the story and indeed had hoped to learn about it but it was not to be. Beltrunner Science Fiction fantasy football This is a fun simple adventure story that will appeal to fans of Asimov Clarke and other authors of the Golden Age Beltrunner Book One in the Beltrunner Saga Scavenging known space makes for a hard life and surviving outside of the Corporations in the Belt makes it all the harder It is not surprising that Collier and his unusual companion Sancho hit bottom like many before them until they make the discovery of their lives or deaths as it may turn out to be Beltrunner is a solidly enjoyable science fiction adventure fast paced and filled with the kind of characters that make you smile break your heart or just make you clench your jaw I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it O Brien builds a universe to get lost in that is as hard gritty and unforgiving as deep space itself It is a well written romp around space like many others yet plenty of surprising elements give the story a depth and purpose all its own without the heavy strain of space melodrama Read it because it is both light fun and thoughtful reading A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review This review and others at annevolmering.
