Story and the main characters are amazing I needed to get used to the writing style and long dialogues but a great debut novel from Chandler Alexander and an eye opening story for somebody like me I am so happy I got to read this story I received this copy from Chandler Alexander in exchange for my honest review Amal is a fifteen year old boy growing up in the slums of the Mississippi Delta His mother beats him regularly and his dad left him All he wants is a normal family When he gets in another fight with his mother he decides he is better of on his own But where to go when you are fifteen and have nothing The main character Amal grows up in this book In the beginning he is an innocent little boy who wants nothing then a normal family Then under some pretty hard circumstances he adapts He becomes really aggressive and makes some bad decisions However he stays loyal to those he loves and protects He is also very determined to get a better life for him and Javion his nephew He does not give into the temptations like drugs or alcohol.

They were to long for my taste and I feel like they didn t lead anywhere Sometimes I didn t really understand the characters and what they were fighting about Like almost all fights between Sea Sea and Amal Another thing I had trouble with was the language used in this book I was shocked when I started reading I did not expect that at all There are so many curse words used and so much slang But it fit the story and made the story much realistic In the ending there is a twist about Amal his family I was waiting for to happen And I am really happy that Amal got to figure that out Even if I was expecting it I still really enjoyed reading it I was so heart broken about Javion.

accepted being a little bit intrigued by the synopsis and most of all by the title The synopsis promised this novel to be an emotional one and trust me when I say it totally was The Makings of a Fatherless Child was a dark gritty and heart breaking coming of age story that grabbed my attention from the very first chapter It wasn t an easy read firstly because my heart broke so many times for the main character Amel and secondly because at times it was really depressing The Makings of a Fatherless Child fallows the life of Amel River from age 13 to age 18 focusing the most on his 15th year of life Amel is from the wrong side of the tracks Needless to say growing up in the Mississippi Delta wasn t easy for this boy He longs for his mother s love and for his absent father s attention While his mother is abusive verbally and physically his father wants nothing to do with him But Amel desperately wants NEEDS for his father to be there for him to guide him on his journey to being a man On his journey Amel tries to find who he is to find a father s role in his child life and simply why sometimes life has to be so cruel Honestly this is all you have to know about this novel In my opinion the blurb says way too much about the story Personally I would have preferred to be vague The entire story is told from Amel s point of view which I loved His voice was honest strong and so unique I felt deeply for this boy His story was gut wrenching at times and like I mentioned above times than I liked depressive It was really hard to read about his life his reality but at the same time heartwarming somehow to read about his needs and dreams Because yeas despite his reality Amel has dreams He dreams and hopes for a better life for a caring family for a future and I wanted so badly for him to have it all I found Amel s character to be fantastically developed His portrayal was pure and simply stellar so realistic and for sure my favorite aspect of this novel He was a complex layered character that manage to make me feel so much He made me smile but he also made me so angry at times His decisions at some point into the story saddened me or frustrated me and despite his dreadful actions I really wanted for him to have a future and find happiness As the story progresses Amel learns to love unconditionally learns the value of friendship and also learns that every action has consequences His love for poetry was something I hadn t excepted but I really liked Every single one of his poems was honest from the heart and I really enjoyed reading them I have to say I really appreciated the fact the author stayed true to Amel s character but also to all the others supportive characters All the supporting characters in this book were fascinating All of them were so well portrayed were so raw and so flawed and dysfunctional My favorite supporting character was without a doubt King Lee This man was so fascinating Flawed and full of regrets Kind Lee plays an important role in Amel s life He becomes Amel s mentor and friend teaching him all kind of things about life family what exactly means to be a good father but also about good and bad I enjoyed reading about his theories and I loved his relationship with Amel The story was unpredictable from start to finish It kept me at the edge of my seat and the multitude of realistic twists were interesting and engaging While overall I enjoyed this story I have to admit the ending left me a little unsatisfied I just wanted something I know it was an open ending but I really think it was a little too abrupt The makings of a fatherless childdown Please if you enjoyed my work recommend my work to others and leave an honest review Again thank you With unmatched gratitude and a humble heartChandler Alexander site_link The pace events which I respected But I hated almost every other character I find them aggressive weird and vulgar I didn t get the relationships Amal was trying to have with them The only one I did like were Javion and Money I love how the story starts it grabbed my attention You know how the story ends but you get intrigued How did he get there What did he do What makes him so interesting the reporter wants to write a story about him I really liked the writing style It feels like I am that reporter and I am listening to Amal his story It is very easy to read and I had a hard time putting the book down The pace is very good The events are happening very fast after each other that is what keeps this book so interesting and what kept me turning the page What made this book really special is that one line can make you smile while another can make you cry when the lines are on the same page I loved the emotions in this book I really felt them and sympathized for the main character There where some pretty emotional twists in the book I did not see coming and which I liked And a lot of people die what I did not expect I didn t mind the big time lapses they fit the story and made it interesting I am not a fan at all off this cover I think it is quite dull It could have been much beautiful that it would grab people s attention I wouldn t pick this up in a book store based on the cover It also does not fit this story because the story is so vivid and emotional What really troubled me was how woman are treated in this book I get that this is how it goes in a few country s but it was awful reading about it The worst was they did not stand up for themselves and just took the beatings Some other negative things about the book are the weird nick names Though a lot off them are explained I didn t like to read them over and over I also had trouble with a few dialogues I really do not understand you can do something like this to a child I liked how the story ended their suffering and joy are yours to experience as well Their poverty and predicament leak through the pages to the point of becoming a palpable entity.
