Long Beach Press Telegram writer Tim Grobaty was promoted to humor columnist at his newspaper back when it was still a glamorous and coveted job In I m Dyin Here the author means two things He ll likely die at the job he has spent nearly four decades doing and at the same time his profession is seeing its last days Weaving together personal history and a selection of columns written over the course of his storied career Grobaty offers readers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a dying breed the local newspaper columnist With everyday life fatherhood holidays suburbia and random encounters with animals serving as fodder for his column Grobaty reveals his sources of motivation and vulnerability all the while struggling to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing industry I m Dyin Here A Life in the PaperIf I tried really hard maybe I could find something about this book that I didn t like But I doubt it The irony of the theme of this ridiculously thoughtful and entertaining read is that Grobaty s style of writing is as the quintessential internet blogger Just staggering often hilarious insight into yes the human condition that s all Paperback I cannot rate this book higher than five stars and that makes me sad Increasingly intelligent and full of wit and humor Tim Grobaty s I m Dyin Here reads very much like a current Bukowski or even like Mark Twain s nonfiction While roughly half of the book are of his various columns that depict his life in that particular moment they are instantly relatable in many ways whether you re younger or older As part of Long Beach Mayor s Book Club Mayor Robert Garcia chose a book that perfectly encapsulates the cities vibrance and tenacity He gives the big city of Long Beach a lovely though somewhat crude in a good way level of small town charm There are several personal chapters that tug at the heartstrings and some that actually make you laugh out loud But perhaps the best pointer of all about Grobaty is that he s one of the rarest breed of authors one who has truly grown and adapted to the changing world around him While he does talk about some of the difficulties that has plagued numerous newspaper writers especially columnists his aforementioned adaptability makes it seem like he barely broke a sweat Tim seems like the kind of writer that is well aware that he s good at what he does and that s perfectly okay This is a book that deserves to be read by anyone in the world Paperback Hilarious touching extremely well written book by a local journalist who is now a local celebrity Grobaty writes about his life his family and his job Loved reading about our city and our paper this book feels so close to home Sweetly nostalgic You ll love it PS Hey my family once removed but connected for eternity Dave is mentioned in the book Always in the middle of things that Dave Paperback It s funny shocking and overall a really good read It makes me want to be a journalist in the early 70s all the way to the late 90s This book brought me out of my reading block Paperback Grobary s lighthearted essays look back at his life as a newspaper columnist contemplating whether he will die at his desk or the industry will die around him It s a fun collection Paperback

Two stars for the book added one because I live in Long Beach so I enjoyed some the references to my city Clunky metaphors throughout author s annoying habit of referring to himself as us and sophomoric writing albeit somewhat endearing with the self deprecating tone I have lived in Long Beach for 13 years without ever reading the Press Telegram and this book did not convince me to break that streak Paperback Always loved his column loved this book A laugh out loud story about adventures at the Press Telegram Paperback.
