Never Left the Battlefields By Chick Havey
And very occasionally sex Compelling stuff although one tends to wish he d written it earlier when it might have been linearIt s the memories of a Vet in his 90s so don t expect all the narratives to fit together perfectly He stops and give recent stories of his position as a voluble Vet for many US Events since the war or of other period of his life often And sometimes he s a little dodgy on the timing of some event or the proper use of some gear But he s plumbing the depth of his memories and what he can recall is really great to hear Getting this sort of raw earthy memoir is why you read this sort of book anyway I found it fun and compelling.
Havey says the hilarious line Of a ten man squad Two Shooting EIGHT looting my capitalisation I cracked up but I know my father Pacific 44 45 and uncle Europe 44 45 would have backed him up so i knew it was a realistic statement or a mild exaggeration There are several other times where Havey s candid narrative is just so human in the face of war both time of hardness and softness that you just have to thank the man for his service and for writing down his memoirs A good read English Havey writes with a simple style that is of a hodge podge of memories rather than a chronological narrative The book is loosely in chronological order but Havey skips around talking between the past and the present He recalls action in Germany.
This memoir is just his memory without fitting that memory into a larger context Havey definitely has passion He writes clearly so any reader can understand his thoughts and feelings He makes no apologies or political correctness When President Obama asked him to consider forgiving the Germans in 2010 Havey groaned because he continues to blame them for the death of 55 million people His story involves than just the adrenaline of combat Near the end of his book he notes how a movie review got him thinking about the movies Fury with Brad Pitt and Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks Havey says that Fury was in line with his experiences in observing good human beings becoming desensitized by violence and doing horrible things He mentions PTSD in several places indicating that he is haunted by what he saw at Dachau and murdering German soldiers in close combat He does not go on to show how PTSD affected his re integration into civilian life in the United States. Overall.
#heading[4]Private Havey received thirteen major decorations in six months of combat from the Battle of the Bulge to the Liberation of the Death Camp at Dachau in April 1945 His accounts of the battles and adventures are real and riveting Now as a 93 year old his long term memory is still exceptional after 33430 sunrises in these years In effect Chick Havey never left the battlefield This book is the story of that exceptional life Never Left the BattlefieldsBirney T Chick Havey was a soldier in the WWII US 42nd Rainbow Division so called because it had contained National Guard Units from across the Nation in WWI Originally a trained Paratrooper and Parachute Instructor he volunteered into the great American Infantry Crisis of 1944 becoming a member of the 222nd infantry Regiment In this lovely little volume Chick tells us his story as well as just about anything that comes into his head as he remembers it in 2015 in his 90s He joined the Division in the Vosges mountains fought the Battle of The Bulge as part of Patton s Third army and then continued on into Germany Havey gives us the GI s view of the war although he seemed to act sometimes as an orderly for the Regimental Commander It s a war of shooting scrounging eating looting if not perfect as a historical record Nothing like reading about this stuff by the guys who did it. With some adult themes and a little bit of graphic injury and carnal description this is a book best read by a Junior reader at least 13 years old For the Gamer Modeller Military Enthusiast its a fun one with a lot of ideas for Scenarios Dioramas although it s insight into the thinking of the GI that the Enthusiast will appreciate At one point only to go on a tangent discussing his army buddies ten years post war return the to battle in Germany fast forward to a WWII commemoration in France and finally return to the battle It can be confusing Overall it is difficult to assuage the veracity of his memoir On one hand he is using his own recollections I am willing to accept his memories as facts But on the other hand he does not refer to other books or people He vaguely references television shows Ultimately an education entertaining and quick read He has many illustrations and is clearly proud of his service to our country The book is full of bravery and passion English Enjoyed reading this book as I am so grateful for Mr Harvey s services in France my country.Good documentary overall English
