L'Hébreu : 3000 ans d'histoire (French Edition) By Mireille Hadas-Lebel
It s a good concise history of Hebrew language Every chapter is a period discussing a period of history of Hebrew language when it went through significant changes There isn t much analysis of Hebrew grammar but each chapter has a subchapter dedicated to vocabulary which I found particularly interesting Especially when discussing the attempts to revive Hebrew author picks out some interesting problems and sometimes funny solutions to them for example maskilim wanted to adapt the language to the realities of the time but didn t want to lose its biblical roots and so came up with interesting neologisms such as hand houses for gloves and eye houses for eyeglasses There were many things I didn t know for example that in the Hebrew Bible only 500 Hebrew roots are used is this true Of course the language is particularly good at forming new words of existing roots so I can see why this might not constitute a problem Also that the verbs in Biblical Hebrew didn t have a tense only the aspect the tense apparently came later in Mishnaistic period with the influence of Aramean Oh and of course the invention of diacritics indicating the vowels in Masoretic times The context explains the need to do this Hebrew ceased to be spoken but there was a prohibition to change the Biblical text because this might result in the changes in the world itself so people needed to come up with something Also turns out there were a couple of competing traditions to mark vowels the Babylonian system used to write little vowels on top of the letters and the current one was just the one that won Again the book is very concise and sometimes I really wanted it to probe a bit deeper but then again I guess I can pick some other book now that I have read the introduction also sorry for writing this in English as far as I know there s only a French edition of this book but I m afraid my attempts to formulate all this in French would make people s eyes bleed French
