But my first book I had no problem reading this book as a stand alone mystery The characters are realistically complex with their interwoven relationships and their secrets as a lot of families have The mystery was well written with a quick pace and several well placed red herrings to keep the reader engaged and guessing I look forward to reading of this series I listened to the audio version of this book Narrator Michelle Babb is a wonderful storyteller She brings each of the character s personality to life You always know exactly which character is which because she uses great accents and diction She has perfect pacing of the storytelling.

Nailed nails castelldefels Sam refuses to give any kind of an alibi which does make it harder for the police to drop her as a possible suspect and of course Alex can t help but get involved in trying to find the real killer to clear first Sam and then her husband Michael after it s clear Sam isn t a viable suspect In the process she learns a great deal not just about the dead inspector but his family his dead wife s family the school both his and Sam s kids attend and an impressive array of other people who may or may not be connected to his death but in this small town were definitely connected to him one way or another. Nailed it meaning It s a lively interesting story with unexpected bits of humor I especially like the fact that the characters are well developed and complex We meet several characters who are definitely quite flawed and hard to like yet prove to have some quite positive traits as well Nor is it a simplistic see everyone is nice after all These are characters who are truly a realistic mix of the good and the bad. Nailed it netflix Another thing I really like is that Alex while by no means a professional investigator doesn t do reckless or foolish things That doesn t mean she never makes a mistake but she doesn t do the things that make you want to scream at the page or the screen that doing that is insane and you re going to get yourself killed She considers them sometimes but she doesn t do them I love that simple possession of common sense as well as intelligence. Nailed it netflix Michelle Babb always enhances anything she narrates which is why I rarely pass up an opportunity to review her audiobooks Her voice is clear and easy on the ear and she s both expressive and good at distinguishing the characters. Nailed meaning slang I received a free copy of this audiobook from the narrator as the books are self contained stories but with the same characters present Nailed was described to me as a cosy mystery and it is an accurate term Despite the story revolving around a violent murder the characters aren t in any rush to find the killer There are scenes where the protagonist discusses the killing while eating biscuits and mentioning cake recipes every so often and there is very little action It s a bit like the show Murder She Wrote and Nancy Drew is also name dropped in this book so it is a relaxing story to go through There are a varied cast of characters and the writing for them was enjoyable with a number of humorous events as well There is one good joke which gets setup early on and takes hours before the final punchline and with this being a dialogue driven story there can be a lot of emotional language but swearing is kept to a minimum Even though a gruesome murder involving a nail gun brings everything together you never get scenes or vivid descriptions of gore. Nailedmagazine.com email The protagonist is Alex Harris co owner of an employment agency who happens to investigate mysteries on the side Her husband is a police detective and the story begins with him arresting Alex s sister at the agency due to her being present right near the murder site on the night it occurred and is refusing to explain her reason for being there Alex is thus determined to find the real killer and clear her sister s name The story is told in the first person and the only perspective we view is that of AlexWe constantly get her thoughts on the other characters and see that Alex has quite a number of quirks and flaws It was good seeing how she views the world and those around her and I was surprised by how judgemental of a person she could be Considering she is a detective trying to discover the truth she can be very fast in making snap opinions She refers to one lady as a dirty skank after hearing only one side of a story and without verifying if it is even true and can be downright ruthless to her husband Due to him arresting Alex s sister he gets mistreated quite badly Alex constantly threatens him with divorce and is passive aggressive and sarcastic to him makes him sleep in another room fantasises how much she d enjoy seeing him homeless and penniless and plans on sabotaging the home s air conditioning during a deep summer so he could only feel discomfort when at home It s unfortunate he gets treated like this as it s not like John the husband had a choice It would be quite the damning scandal if he had to announce to his employer or a court of law that he declared his family members present at a murder site to be immune from all police questioning but this is what Alex wants from him I would have liked this if we had of John s viewpoint or if it was double sided as instead John is always calm talks only a little and just takes everything Alex throws at him without complaint Seeing internal family drama would have been great but it is only ever Alex who attacks and John who just accepts it She even refuses to refer to John by name instead just Detective Very minor spoiler It gets quite hypocritical later as Alex damns John for daring to consider a family member a suspect but Alex later does exactly this with another member of the family It is also at this exact moment she starts calling the husband John again almost like she can accept what he did and this moment is quite subtle in that regard The book goes quite deep during Alex s discussions with the rest of the cast The murder isn t the only incident that happened and events span back several years in uncovering the whole story There is a lot of interesting moments and sad backstories and one thing in particular that was great is that you the reader can discover the truth yourself There are badly written who dun its where the killer is someone who only appears at the very end so you never get the chance to figure out the mystery Here you are able to uncover the answer before the reveal so it does reward you in joining Alex s journey It can be good with Alex being essentially a murder mystery hobbyist as it s shown she does not have all the answers Eventually by the end she does but she needs help and it means the reader can acquire the satisfaction of being a better sleuth than the hero themselves. Nailed netflix One thing I didn t like was some of the character introduction writing felt clunky 30 seconds into the book we get the line John Vanderburg lead detective of the Indian Cove Police Department and my husband It would have been better if John was revealed as the police detective during the sister arrest scene This same method of introducing characters appears several times but it gets a lot better as Alex speaks to characters she has never met before and thus their identities are given to us in a natural way. Naledzani mulaudzi Alex was also too casual at rare crucial moments There is one section where she has good reason to believe a character could be in danger so she decides to send her husband a voicemail and hope for the best She at no point attempts to dial an emergency number even though earlier in the book this is deemed an option and just assumes her husband will see the voicemail before someone potentially gets into trouble I quite liked the cosy mystery vibe for most of the story but it should have demanded something urgent than voicemail. Nailed it show The supporting cast of characters were a good and varied lot and their wide array of emotions are portrayed excellently by the narrator Michelle Babb If you choose to get this via audiobook then Nailed is the only one in the series you can listen to at time of writing 7th September 2022 There are no supporting sound effects or music so the entirety of this audiobook relies on Michelle s performance I could easily tell who the characters were by how the accents and voices distinctly change and the audio quality was great in its whole duration There is a wide mixture of characters of various ages lifestyles and sexes and they all come across really well. Book nails online In the end it was good for someone like me who is rather unfamiliar with the reading listening of cosy stories Most of my library is dark fantasy Warhammer and horror but I had no problems having fun with this It took me two sessions to finish and I found Alex s journey an enjoyable one Disclaimer the book was given to me as part of its promotion I am under no obligation to write any review nor was it requested of me I had never heard of these books before but enjoyed the sample on Audible so I requested if could have a copy which they kindly gave me Kindle Edition This was my first book in the Alex Harris Mystery series I really liked it Author Elaine Macko has a new fan in me NAILED is book eight in her Alex Harris but I was able to pick up and follow it as though it was a standalone Don t get me wrong I would recommend reading the other books in the series as I plan to do because you will get a much better feel of the characters and where they started in the series Well written with a nicely constructed plot NAILED with its short chapters I love short chapters was a fast moving read From page one it was quick paced and never slowed down until the end There were plenty of twists which led to several suspects and kept me guessing Not only was I eager to find out who done it I was really interested in seeing how another storyline in the book was resolved And all around enjoyable read Kindle Edition I really enjoyed this book I checked if I could get the rest of the books in the series but even though it is book eight this this the only book available at the moment so I will have to keep an eye out for releases I really enjoyed it I liked the characters and thought they were well rounded and like able The mystery was good with plenty of suspects clues and red herrings a real who done it that you can solve along with the main character and one I enjoyed greatly mainly because she did solve it by asking questions and not just guessed or when a gun was pulled on her There was also a lot going besides the main murder and In fact she had three mysteries to clear up two deaths and a cheating husband his sister needs money his ex sister in law thought he has killed his own wife he had some shady business dealing with an old college friend and what about the naughty photos of the current girlfriend All these people had a much better reason to kill him than Sam Alex just has to prove it but with Sam reluctant to provide an alibi to the police because she is scared her husband will find out that she doesn t trust him Alex might just to investigate her own family Then someone else is attack and throws all her theory s out the window Can there both be related Can Alex find out what is going on and find out once and for all if the dead man really did kill his wife. Nailed netflix Michelle Babb is great at bringing stories like these alive and making them so enjoyable like only she can do I hope if there are books in this series then the author choose Michelle to read them again Kindle Edition

Well worth the seven hours of listening time which just flew by.Recommended
