Is not fully developed in some way the reader is left to suppose he has some mental disability and yet Aster is pivotal to the story and Stephan shows a wonderful brotherly protectiveness towards him from the start. Double bladed battle axe You can read the rest of my review here English Original review posted hereThis is the first book in a new series which aims to retell classic myths from the point of view of teenage protagonists I love the idea and think it could be a real hit with readers it s the kind of thing I would have loved when I was younger I know one of my favourite books told part of Cleopatra s story when she was a teenager and I felt connected to her at that age than in books where she was older. I was looking forward to reading this book as I m a Classics graduate and love anything that reinvents classic Greek tales The book offers an exciting new twist on the well known Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and it s a great way to introduce young readers to that ancient world I can t wait to welcome Philip to the Stratford upon Avon Literary Festival 2016 English The author s noteWhilst I used a map of the place at Knossos as a template for the palace that Stephen and his family inhabit.

The double axe book author

It would be well within most students comfort zones so many novels these days put students off because they believe they may struggle reading them The story has plenty of action and intrigue as it creates a new perspective on ancient Greek mythology featuring the Minotaur We are hoping that it appeals to Percy Jackson fans even though it does not contain the humour We will see how it goes English pacey re telling of the Minotaur mythThis is a refreshing and lively version of the Minotaur myth is pitched to capture the attention of a new generation of readers The story is told from the viewpoint of 13 year old Stephan.

Significance of the double sided axe

Dark forces are at work in the House of the Double Axe Stephan the thirteen year old son of King Minos of Crete stumbles across a terrifying conspiracy Is the Minotaur a half man half bull who eats human flesh real Or is something even dangerous threatening to engulf both the palace and the world Stephan must race to save his family from a terrible fate and find out what really lurks inside the labyrinth You think you know the story Think again The Double Axe is the first instalment in Philip Womack s Blood and Fire series which reimagines classical myths from the point of view of teenage protagonists It s a thrilling tale of adventure and an opportunity for young readers to engage with and learn about classical mythology The Double Axe Blood and Fire 1 The first instalment in a series of books that re imagining some of the classic myths from the point of view of their teenage protagonists gives today s young readers an introduction to classic mythology Doubtlessly well written It isn t heard to imagine The Double Axe a re working of the minotaur myth as seen through the eyes of thirteen year old Stephan son of King Minos of Crete being relayed around a fire and yet for me there was something missing Something that I can t quite put my finger on. Book the double axe restaurant Whilst generally speaking I have mixed feelings about re tellings all too often finding them pale interpretations of the original Not that this is of concern here as the author does an impressive job of putting his own unique spin on the story Nor is there a problem with the mythology which I can see piquing the interest of young readers And as for the characters Stephan and his sister Ariadn are both admirable heroes witch Myrrah a suitable foe As I said something I can t quite put my finger on. Double exequatur A novel I m sure my younger self would have relished Despite any reservations I may have had about this particular instalment I m intrigued to learn where future books in the series will take us. Double axle for trailer Disclaimer Read and reviewed on behalf of the publishers Alma Books no financial compensation was asked for nor given English thought the re imagining of the classical myth of the minotaur with Prince Deucalion Stephanos narrating worked extremely well. Kindle the double axe book review The reader gets to experience all the emotions a 13 year old does All those tangle of emotions and confusion The confusion of doing something that is expected of you but not feeling right doing it but still wanting the approbation of your elders Knowing that something is definitely wrong but on the surface accepting that your elders know better And with Stephan s grit mettle and loyalty to his family and his people despite being unsure of himself determined to still investigate and uncover what Myrrah the Priestess is up to It s not just Stephan either sister Ariadne is a strong character and plays a key part Sibling relationships are no different today There is the balance of hero and a heroine so plenty of appeal for young male and female readers aged between 9 12. Double axe matplotlib Philip Womack s writing flows and it was so easy to imagine myself here in this story The beliefs and rituals the settings of the castle and how life was lived and the woods The mythical creatures give pause for thought too with the mountain people and the darkness of the shadow god giving a mixture of intrigue but also fear There were times in the labyrinth the hairs stood up on the back of my neck I loved the darkness the thrill and adventure but also the time period is interesting too There s plenty to keep imaginations hooked in The Double Axe Betrayals the quest sacrifice facing fears and the strength that comes with working together to create a strong bond that surmounts anything Morals and messages for everyone Recommended for adult as well as Young Adult readers I would like to thank the publishers for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review English Philip Womack takes the ancient myth of King Minos and the Minotaur and retells it with a teenage protagonist in his latest book The Double Axe He adds exciting political intrigue and mystery to the royal court and blood and gore and fantastical creatures worthy of a time of hunting and war when science hadn t quite revealed all the mysteries of the universe. Double axle for trailer Research conducted by the OUP Oxford University Press and published this week reveals that 93 per cent of the teachers they surveyed in primary schools said it is important that children have access to classic stories Talking to writers and reading many children s books it s not surprising to find that so much of our contemporary literature either contains threads and fragments of classic tales or consists of whole stories reshaped and updated into contemporary settings Fairy tales subtly haunt Katherine Rundell s latest book The Wolf Wilder David Almond s award winning A Song for Ella Grey retells the Orpheus story albeit with modern twists and Mal Peet famously borrowed Othello from Shakespeare for his award winning novel Exposure The best writers know their classic stories. Book the double axe book adaptation Philip Womack introduces The Double Axe by explaining that he is stretching out his myth like a tapestry indeed the beauty of using a classical myth as a basis for a modern story is that the myths retain plasticity and so can be manipulated in the retelling Myths were what remained for the Ancient Greeks about their early history Thucydides wrote that Minos had a fleet of ships the first king to have such an armada and yet made no mention of the Minotaur preferring to stick to history with no mention of gods In rewriting the story of King Minos and the Minotaur an author can revisit Ovid or Catullus or study Ancient Greek art or architecture The ruins of Minos palace at Knossos are apparently like a labyrinth themselves something that Philip Womack draws on in his retelling Interestingly though Womack takes us on a very different journey whereas most readers would expect that any retelling of the Minotaur myth would lead with the protagonist as Theseus Womack splits off to a different tangent and so the intrigue starts from the first page. The double a trading company Thirteen year old Stephan prince at the court of King Minos finds himself heir when his older brother is killed But when his father leaves to avenge his son s death Stephan is left in a palace that swarms with rumours and political machinations the engineer Daedalus is keeping secrets in the basement a strange and powerful priestess is prophesying unusual portents and carrying out unusual practices and Stephan wonders if someone within the court is betraying his family to Athens With his sister Ariadne Stephan works to find out what is going on and how he can save his family and his father s kingdom. Book the double axe series Although told from a teenage sensibility with a fairly modern voice and therefore sounding a resonance for a modern teen reader there is plenty in here that still speaks to mythology and fantasy with constant awareness that this is set in Ancient Greek times The lavish descriptions of the palace and the food impart a distinctive smell and sense of place rooted in an ancient time with lush olives and roasting meats a sea breeze across the island and hunts in woodlands. Double axe matplotlib Yet as for any teenager there is the struggle to have independence and for this Stephan is granted a view to his future as the heir to the throne and yet a teen s pull to the family as a safe retreat Being a teenager is about recognising the threats to family from the outside but also coming to terms with the fact that the family itself may not be the safe haven one imagined it parents aren t infallible. The double a trading company Womack does this cleverly with his weaving of the ancient myths from the doubts over the queen s fidelity did she mate with a bull to create a minotaur the threat of conflict from Athens and most importantly with Stephan s siblings His feisty sister Ariadne is a constant companion and fellow fighter who guides him through the labyrinth of the palace as well as through the web of intrigue His little brother Aster and this was a really interesting take on it It s not quite what you expect if you know the story but enjoyable all the same The historical setting feels well researched and realistic while the myth and magical elements are played around with a bit as Womack puts his own spin on the events. Book the double axe summary The sibling relationship between Stephan and Ariadne was really wonderful and I particularly like Ari as a character too often in re tellings like this female characters still take a back seat but Ari was brilliant resourceful brave and smart just what I wanted her to be Stephan our protagonist was really strong too and I can imagine him being really relatable for young teenage readers He is young but has to deal with the responsibilities of a man the pressures of being heir to the throne and also saving the palace from a dark conspiracy It s not easy being him This is a dark and action packed story based on a familiar myth but with its own unique twist I m really looking forward to the next installment English My book blog book was a whole load of firsts for me I m not usually a fan of reading teenage books and I have most definitely never read any new takes on mythologynot that I know a great deal about mythology anyway That being said I was eager to give The Double Axe a go because I thought that it sounded interesting. Book the double axe restaurant Philip Womack has written a brilliant children s book that I just could not put down I absolutely loved it and although the basis of the mythology was there Womack has managed to write a story in a completely different way than it has ever been told. Book the double axe restaurant Depending on what age range this is targeted for could sway my opinion slightly because I do feel that this could be considered as rather scary for the younger audiences With this being said I do think that if Womack tamed the scarier scenes down then the story wouldn t have been as fun to read I love Womack s writing style and I found the book incredibly easy to read It was very fluent and didn t take much effort sometimes you get those books that you just have to force yourself to persevere the story was brilliant and I really felt that Womack built a connection between the readers and the characters. Book the double axe restaurant A brilliant read scholars disagree about how each room was used so I ve found it useful to think of the palace as an imaginary space in which the myth happens It isn t real or historical simply a framework on which to stretch a story like a tapestry. Double axe matplotlib For clarity I have used the Greek names for the main characters that have come down to us in the received myth Minos Pasiphae Ariadne Theseus Theseus s companions have names from Greek poetry Minos according to legend had several children one of whom was called Deucalion I have imagined him as my hero Deucalioon Stephanos I have of necessity invented some characters a couple of names that come from a Minoan tablet Bansa Rusa others I ve given Greek names that felt appropriate to their function and character Timon Myrrah Lysias Lords Callias and Nicodemus Myths are elastic this is simply my version another way in to the great store of stories that is Greek mythology The Double Axe is the first instalment in Philip Womack s Blood and Fire series. Pdf double elimination bracket Philip Womack is the author of four critically acclaimed novels for children English I was wavering between three and four stars with this one It started really well building the tension and mystery with the killing of the white hind by Prince Stephanos while out on a hunting party with his father King Minos and the ensuing curse on the family declared by the priestess Myrrah. Epub the double axe review I enjoyed Womack s use of language to describe the action and the Prince s emotions I found that it lost its appeal a bit towards the end as it seemed a little rushed Having said that one of the reasons we purchased it for our school library was because at only 242 pages of large well spaced font son of King Minos and includes all the familiar characters Ariadne Daedalus Theseus and Icarus all in slightly different but very believable roles and concludes with a satisfyingly terrifying ending English The Double Axe (Blood and Fire #1).
