I gave this book four stars because I really enjoyed the story and it s characters 398 Do not judge a person by the way they look This book is very interesting and historical to read I was a year behind before I was born when this story started History is such a fun subject for me to learn while I am at school just like this book Do not judge a person by the way they look Society sometimes is so cruel when they see a person or groups dressing differently This book is an eye opening for me to learn about freaks I call them unique individuals or groups but just like us they are humans but different style I like Otis and Pearlie as the characters but loved Sid the most I loved the setting as well Country is a quite life and enjoys every moment of it Sid is a typical guy that was lost in the right direction He changed a lot from better person to successful man This book has sense of humor.

And drama 398 Well this novel certainly surpassed my expectations The narrative quickly grabbed my attention and kept me intrigued all the way through I found it to be a real page turner due to its interesting storyline and well thought out character development I appreciate that the personalities in this novel are multifaceted and not the usual stereotypes that are often found in fiction It s obvious that the author based her tale on real people facing issues that we can all recognize and easily identify with Being a child of the 70s I also appreciate that the language and description of the era is authentic to the times Thanks for the trip Ms Neumann.

Try not to break his probation and figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. A Year in the Company of freaksaver A Year In The Company Of Freaks is a coming of age tale that can also be labeled as historical fiction Sid and all of the boarders in the farmhouse are young and trying to figure out what they want from this world They are also facing a certain amount of discrimination from the town because they are very different from the people in town Even within the house they face discrimination because they are all unique One of the tenants named Mika is going to a church school and gets referred to as a Jesus freak and is treated like an outsider We also have a biker trying to win custody of his daughter and a Vietnam veteran who has trouble socializing and suffers from PTSD There is also the problem that with the exception of Mika.

Committing to a 500 page book is a rare occurrence for me It is even rare that I actually read that entire 500 page book without finding myself skimming through the blah blah blahs This book didn t have blah blah blahs I didn t want to miss anything so I actually read every word and I need to look into reading other books from this author I loved getting to know the characters and watching them grow and change as relationships and bonds formed This was a wonderful book to remind us about judging a book by its cover and about forgiveness and the healing power of mistakes It is also a great novel to share a part of our history that is often overlooked I highly recommend it to the generations of the 70 s including those hippies and non hippies of the decade I think this is a book that most adults would appreciate and enjoy It has a comfortable.

It s 1972 and a seismic clash of cultures is rattling northern California In the redneck town of Trinity Springs rumors of hippies migrating up from San Francisco have residents bracing for an invasion When Italian American hometown boy and Berkeley graduate Sid Jackson is busted for growing pot on his deceased parents farm locals suspect the assault has begun Will a crazy deferral program devised by the sheriff keep Sid out of prison Or will a house full of eccentric strangers a passionate love interest and demons from his past be his undoing A disarmingly appealing tale of discrimination transformation and restoration Freaks is bursting with intrigue drama comic relief and romance Reviewers agree this five star coming of age classic very much reflects the attitude and mood of the times A Year in the Company of FreaksAuthor of highly acclaimed A Year in the Company of Freaks Teresa was raised in a large Midwest family and now lives in Oregon She is also the author of Biancas Vineyard and its sequel Domenicos Table Both books are based on the true stories of her husbands Italian family in Tuscany In addition to enjoying family writing reading meeting her readers wine tasting traveling and all things Italian Teresa loves playing the fiddle with other musicians Author of highly acclaimed A Year in the Company of Freaks Teresa was raised in a large Midwest family and now lives in Oregon She is also the author of Bianca s Vineyard and its sequel Domenico s Table Both books are based on the true stories of her husband s Italian family in Tuscany In addition to enjoying family writing reading meeting her readers wine tasting traveling and all things Italian Teresa loves playing the fiddle with other musicians site_link This was a fun review to write as author Teresa Neumann surprised me and I love being surprised by an author. A Year in the Company of freaksgap When I cracked open A Year in the Company of Freaks I balked at the length 511 pages WOW Could the story really stay compelling with that many pages and would I get through it in time to write this review THREE DAYS LATER I was done How did that happen I am a fast reader but the truth was I couldn t put it down. A Year in the Company of freaksin A Year in the Company of Freaks unfolds through flashbacks and the experiences of several different characters This is a complex way to tell a story but the author handles it beautifully Life love loss humanity and truth all find their expression here is a story that will keep the pages flying by. A Year in the Company of freaksblue When Sid Jackson is forced to move back to the family farm for a year and take on four diverse boarders everything he had come to embrace while living in Berkeley is put to the test And returning to live in a home filled with childhood memories something he had been avoiding at all costs causes the well buried grief he has carried over his parents death when he was only 12 to bubble up Added on top is the daily dynamic created by the odd group of boarders ranging from God fearing to Vietnam veteran. A Year in the Company of freaksflip This is a coming of age story in many ways Yes most of the characters are in their 20 s but as anyone who grew up in the hippy era knows most of us did our best to walk away from every expectation we were raised with We threw out the good right along with the bad It was a time of change during which our move into adulthood didn t come easily Most of us took awhile to figure it all out and give ourselves permission to find a balance between old and new. A Year in the Company of freaksaver A great read and a great look back for me personally at a time I remember well 398 When I ordered it I had the impression that this book was going to be a bit of a historical fiction book It was set in the 70 s yes but I didn t feel I really learned about life in that time period Even so suspense and second chance of life and love especially I enjoyed every chapters that I read If you like to read historical but not the kind of one A Year in the company of freaks will put your mind at ease and enjoy the ride for every characters from this book and maybe change your life perspective from freak people 398 I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. A Year in the Company of freaksjr I don t read a lot of general fiction because I prefer other genres but I m glad I chose to read this book Since I was a teen in the seventies I don t really think of it as historical fiction am I that old It amazes me how the author was able to take a year in the life of 5 strangers and make it so interesting that I had difficulty putting the book down Talk about a page turner Sid just graduated from college in Berkley and planted some pot on his deceased parents farm thinking he could sell enough to make money to travel Europe before getting a job Unfortunately someone turned him in Since the farm is in a small town and his parents were loved by the sheriff and his wife the sheriff is able to get a year of probation for Sid with some restrictions He has to stay on the farm and get boarders and take care of the finances as well start fixing up the farm When the boarders start showing up Sid wonders how in the world he ll ever get through a year with these strangers One is a Jesus freak one is an albino motorcyclist one is just a little crazy and one is a Vietnam vet They re all so different but as they work together to do chores and get to know each other by the end of the year they re good friends Sid not only learns that there s to people than what s on the surface but the year of responsibility helps him to grow up and appreciate his relationships with friends and family. A Year in the Company of freakshark The characters in A Year in the Company of Freaks are complex and believable The turmoil of the seventies is well represented by them It is full of love conflict friendship loyalty it was fun An entertaining read that I would highly recommend 398 This is a tale created from the havoc of the seventies Sid a graduate of Berkley protests and defies all he was raised to believe He has inherited his family ranch but defiles it by illegally planting Marijuana on it and is caught doing so Will the Sherriff and his Godfather be able to keep him out of prison with the plan approved by the judge Can Sid really follow the rules long enough to stay out of prison and gain his inheritance Included in the plan he must give room and board to four boarders Unable to pick his own roommates the sheriff is also limited to his choice of interviewees which results in a very peculiar and unlikely group of renters. A Year in the Company of freaksbook This is an interesting sometimes touching tale of a small community near San Francisco where a town strong in history and community are having to experience change and non traditional values A Year in the Company of Freaks seldom fails to keep the reader captured within the content s pages The drama contains conflicts and various attitudes and situations Reader Beware this novel contains profanity and adult situations. A Year in the Company of freaksjammer This is given a Four and a Half Stars rating This book was gifted me with no stipulation of a positive review This is my honest review 398 In 1972 the hippie movement was still going on the Vietnam war was starting to wind down and there was lots of change and discrimination In the small town of Trinity Springs cultures collide as hippies start to migrate from San Francisco Trinity Springs California is the type of town where everyone knows your name people work hard change happens slowly and hippies aren t welcome. A Year in the Company of freakscafe One of the people who wants out of Trinity Springs is Italian American Sid Jackson He was a student at Berkeley but got busted for growing pot on his deceased parents farm Now he has to spend a year on probation and can t leave the Trinity Springs area In order to make a living Otis the town sheriff and friend to Sid s parents finds boarders to live on Sid s farm and pay rent Now Sid has to live in a house of misfits all the people in the house do drugs and if Sid gets caught around it he will be breaking his probation and get thrown in prison. A Year in the Company of freakside This book is a character study in what people were like in the early seventies and the hardships they faced Sid does dress like a hippie but doesn t really fit into the movement There is one good scene where he goes to a bar and the waitress gets upset with him because of how he looks seeing him as a draft dodger Also I felt for Mika in the way she gets ostracized for being religious The only ones who are supportive of everyone is Otis and his wife Pearlie who are quick to give advice or provide warm meals. A Year in the Company of freaksdom Everyone in the house changes a lot over a year especially Sid who is now forced to deal with the loss of his parents and his own doubts as to whether he can keep from getting high or not I enjoyed watching the characters grow and the support they get from Otis and Pearlie In particular I liked when they point out how true friendship is sacrifice and if it comes easy it s not real This is an idea you see proven among the people in the farm house nothing is easy for them I enjoyed this book much than I thought I would it s a long book but I was so into the characters that it seemed like a quick read The story is about life itself and it s something anyone can relate too 398 Readers will not want to put A Year in the Company of Freaks down Yes I nearly read a 515 page book in one sitting I loved Otis and Pearlie so I think meeting them first in the book and getting pulled into the small town mentality of the time and also into their hopes and love for Sid simply had me hooked by page 3 or so When I received the book and saw the page count I wasn t sure how an author could successfully fill that many pages with just a year in the life of 5 strangers Not only did she tell a wonderful story but she made the pages float by At the end of every chapter I found myself looking even forward to the next chapter and I wasn t ready to leave the characters at the end. A Year in the Company of freaksend A Year in the Company of Freaks is truly a coming of age story I did not like Sid s character at the beginning He was childish immature and carrying a potentially destructive chip on his shoulder Within the first 50 or so pages the author began to show a glimpse or two of a different side of Sid the one that Pearlie and Otis knew was there and she began to slowly allow him to grow and learn and to find himself For himself The strangers who truly became Sid s family went through some coming of age challenges throughout the story as well The author did a great job developing the characters and the values of their relationships throughout the book Nothing was instantaneous or superficial It was a very gradual real coming of age story. A Year in the Company of freaksba Don t let the historical fiction label sway you When I think of historical fiction I think of the Civil War or even Victorian England I was a child in the seventies At that time I lived in a very very very rural part of Southern Ohio I was young so when my military crew cut sporting grandfather talked about the hippies that he encountered at the auto repair shop that he owned with my grandma s displeased descriptions of their long dirty hair and ratty old clothes and drug use the hippie term was frightening to me I think I could easily identify with the fear that surrounded Sid and his band of freaks in their small town However I could also remember that some of those hippies were the first to offer help if my grandpa needed something Sometimes even without his asking This is really a human nature story focusing on kids growing up dealing with fears misconceptions and judgemental minds during a time in our fairly recent history. A Year in the Company of freakshow danny Would I recommend A Year in the Company of Freaks First of all memoir like feel which I love and characters that readers simply won t want to leave I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review All opinions are my own 398 If you are looking for a smash hit book to read than look no further than A Year in the Company of Freaks This was one of the easiest books for me to read Instantly I was transported back in time A time before I was born but it was like I was there Everyone was great from Sid to Sheriff Otis Skinner and his wife Pearlie as well as the rest of the gang Ketch Mika Eliza and Woolf They were all so easy to connect with including Ketch He had some rough edges that needed smoothed over in the beginning but he really was a nice guy In fact it was actually the people of Trinity Springs that brought the negative vibes Instantly they were judging Sid for his physical appearance even though he had came from Trinity Springs I guess some things don t change like today s society Yet we should change for the better Otis and Pearlie did steal some of the lime light from the gang This is only because they were so kind and personable Everyone could not help but fall in love with this couple Despite all of their different personalities Sid Mika Ketch Eliza and Woolf were like one big family As I said prior this is not only a smash hit book but if you came from this era growing up or love a good book with fully developed characters you will fall in love with this book 398 I believe Teresa Neumann has another winner in this novel set in the recent past 1972 The war in Vietnam is being fought long haired hippies abound values and attitudes are changing and the drug culture is in full swing It s a ride down memory lane. A Year in the Company of freaksjr The protagonist Sid returns to his home in small town California Trinity Springs sporting a ponytail and a beard after spending 4 years at Berkeley All he wants at this point is to have a good time and travel But when he is busted for growing pot on his deceased parents farm he has to decide whether to go to jail or spend one year in his parents home on probation with boarders who are strangers to him 5 absolute strangers thrown together for a year each of them as different as chess pieces And so enter Ketch Mika Woolf and Liz all freaks in their own way. A Year in the Company of freaksjack We learn a lot about Sid s happy life with his Italian mother and grandparents We feel his sadness and angst over his parents death made even difficult by having to live in their house so full of memories for him When his grandfather dies a turning point occurs for Sid in his attitude and purpose in life It is a beautiful thing to see Sid grow gradually coping with his emotions finally coming to grips with the past He begins to understand others views and they begin to understand his Of course there is a love interest for Sid It s one of the things that allow him the healing process to begin. A Year in the Company of freakshow danny Apart from Sid my favourite characters are Otis and Pearlie who hail from Texas Pearlie is kind hearted lovable affectionate and emotional Generous to a fault she brings Sid homemade chocolate chip cookies in a Folgers s coffee can Both Otis and Pearlie Sid s godparents love him if not always understanding him. A Year in the Company of freaksaver I love the author s description of the house where Sid lives and grew up in especially the 3 storey high library I can imagine myself in that oasis There is an underlying Italian theme that I enjoyed Sid short for Siderno Italian words from his grandmother Nonna Antonia and a funny saying of his mother s I suppose in many ways Texans are like Italians are authentic The author s two previous wonderful books have Italian themes and I wondered if and how she would work in into this novel I wasn t disappointed I highly recommend this feel good story Not only is it an amazing story of healing and choices but it also explores the nature of friendship attraction and why we love who we do 398
