In 1982 Gruenwald Steven Grant and Bill Mantlo co wrote Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions the first limited seriespublished by Marvel Comics As a writer Gruenwald is best known for creating the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and his ten year stint as the writer of Captain America during which he contributed several notable characters such as Crossbones Diamondback and U. S Agent He made a deliberate effort to create villains who would be specific to Captain America as opposed to generic foes who could as easily have been introduced in another comic. His 60 issue run on Quasar realized Gruenwald s ambition to write his own kind of superhero However he considered his magnum opus to be the mid 1980s 12 issue miniseries Squadron Supreme which told the story of an alternate universe where a group of well intended superheroes decide that they would be best suited to run the planet site_link I actually read this before I read the storyline this alternate reality diverged from but it was a great story regardlessHaving stumbled into ultimate power Korvac sought to use it to bring order to the universe In the Marvel mainstream he failed due to his own insecurities During his final battle with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy he looked to his lover Carina for support and when he saw fear on her face instead of belief in him he gave up his plans and willed himself to death In this alternate reality her support gave him the strength to carry on and destroy the last survivors of the Avengers and Guardians Thor Iron Man Starhawk Moondragon and the Vision. From there Korvac moved forward with his grand plans which led him into conflict with cosmic beings than most folks in that world knew existed He had to face down everyone from the Watcher to Galactus to the Stranger and other lesser known entities like the Gardner the Shaper of Worlds and the In Betweener It was interesting to see him use the heroes he d slain as his strike force he was able to resurrect whichever of them he chose as needed and how the cosmic entities worked to shut him down I never saw the end coming which is par for the course where these What If stories are concerned Excellent story What If 1977 1984 32
