Becoming Lin By Tricia Dower Paperback 1987915070 9781987915075 Literature Fiction Becoming Lin A tale of transformation in a time of chaos. Its 1965. Twenty two year old Linda Wise despairs of escaping her overprotective parents and her hometown, where far too many know she was sexually assaulted as a teenager. Deliverance arrives in the form of marriage to the charismatic, twenty six year old Ronald Brunson, a newly ordained Methodist minister who ignites her passion for social justice. Ron tells her war and racial discrimination are symptoms of the moral rot destroying the country, conjuring up something dark and rancid in her mind, thrilling in its wickedness. He sweeps her away from Stony River, New Jersey, to serve with him at a church in a speck on the map prairie town in Minnesota. What lies ahead for her over the next seven years is the subject of Tricia Dowers penetrating study of a marriage and a womans evolving sense of self as she confronts the trauma that keeps her from her future, unfettered self. BECOMING LIN evokes the turbulent era of Freedom Riders for civil rights, Vietnam war resistance, the US governments war against the resisters, sisterhood and the push for equal rights for women, new age metaphysics, motivational psychology and the unraveling of the traditional marriage contract an era that resonates today in persistent racism and sexism, perpetual war and wide reaching government surveillance.

Fears and motivations The author s vivid descriptions of the rectory and the surrounding landscape evoke a range of responses from readers from unease at a veiled threat Lin perceives in the environment to satisfaction as Lin begins to take charge of her life within the familiarity and refuge of the rectory. Book becoming a book or tv show I enjoyed the sense of nostalgia I had as the novel took me back to a time that I just barely remember and evoked the mood of the era for me This novel is a great read and would recommend it to fans of women s fiction as well as historical fiction readers Although the story is set several decades ago.

Becoming Lin pdf converter com whoo this book was quite a ride It s set in a period of great change and upheaval in the United States as the book blurb mentions the Civil Rights movement the protests against the Vietnam War the sexual and women s revolutions Linda or Lin as she s now known becomes involved in all of these fronts one way or the other through her own personal journey Associated with this is also that generational divide that is apparent from the first chapter tying in not only to all of these socio political happenings in the late 1960s and early 1970s but it also crops up in Lin s personal relationships and changing perspectives with her parents and towards other people as she matures It s a period ripe to set a character drama not to mention some of the issues discussed in the novel still in today s society. Becoming Lin Literature fiction books As the title of the novel states this is very much Lin s journey into adulthood into selfhood When we first reacquaint ourselves with Linda and her life in Stony River she s antsy and looking for a way out of her old life and same old same old She takes her first ticket out through the charismatic Methodist minister Ron Brunson While she finds herself in an almost equally intolerable situation as before she is also introduced through Ron to the social movements that were happening at the time first the protests against the war and hand in hand turning towards the equality movement Lin s progression and character journey from Stony River to Becoming Lin is perhaps a little surprising who would ve thought the quiet girl who always followed the rules would become such a champion for women s rights and against the government s tightening measures against protestors but makes total sense I admit I was getting a bit frustrated in the last third of the novel on the marriage front as it started hitting Revolutionary Road territory this isn t a bad thing Revolutionary Road was good it tackled some really sensitive issues too but the feels I was getting as Lin and Ron try to work out their relationship or not was hitting the end of my patience Also I do wish there were time stamps to indicate when the chapters were happening I picked up after the first few chapters that the narrative was going back and forth between the mid 1960s in the early days of Lin and Ron s marriage to the early mid 1970s with the later troubles The journal entries provide some sense of time but otherwise time stamps I think would ve been handy. Become linkedin top voice Overall Becoming Lin was a very interesting read set in a period of great activity in American history Lin s personal story nicely reflects and intertwines with these greater issues both informing the other The author does a great job in bringing the period to life and setting out the different ideas and attitudes that were floating around during this period I think it s recommended to check out Stony River first before reading this book as you get a fuller sense of Linda s background and story but otherwise Becoming Lin was an great follow up to her story Tricia Dower Tricia Dower s novel Becoming Lin is visceral swirling in deep dialogue subtext and raw emotion tackling the characters daily hurdles and larger social issues This story has multiple facets and layers exploring a personal spiritual historical and social landscape of the value of women s place and role in society and the quest for truth and justice in humanity What it means to honour the self and be unselfish to participate and have purpose and to still go inwards and be in solitude to be attached and unattached at the same time So many details and moments captured in this story resonated with me especially the role of mother to a small child A highly recommended read Tricia Dower This a lovely coming of age story that covers a wide range of topics civil rights Vietnam war resistance equal rights psychology sexual assault love marriage motherhood In terms of the reading experience it started out a bit slow and uneventful for me just in the setup of the story but it really gained its strength through the middle section of the book I breezed through the pages of that part because I just wanted to keep reading At first I wasn t sure about the book going between past and present but by the end of the book I really appreciated how that method showed Lin s transformation Tricia Dower Becoming Lin is Linda Wise s story continuing where Stony River left off The time period is now the 60 s Once again Tricia Dower does an amazing job of capturing the mood and culture of the time period I could personally relate to many aspects of this story attitudes towards feminism and culture shock like when ordinary things suddenly go by very different names I thought a pocketbook was a paperback novel not a purse But then I grew up in Northern Ontario where we talk like Minnesotans What a shock when I spent a summer in New York state I loved this book from beginning to end Tricia Dower I really enjoyed this story It provides fascinating insight into the emotional and social development of a young woman and the evolution of a couple s marriage as well as the changes and growth that were occurring in the United States during the era in which the story is set The main character Linda Brunton nee Wise or Lin rings true as a person coping with past emotional trauma She is also believable as a woman coming of age in an era when feminism was challenging society to make momentous changes Her husband Ron is well drawn and believable as a minister and as a man struggling with and often conflicted by his wife s growing self awareness I felt a connection to Lin and to some of the minor characters such as Ron s friend Artie the unconventional minister and Lin s nurse friend in her apartment building in Minneapolis Minor characters who are striking or eccentric always linger in my mind The author deftly uses details of the settings in the story particularly at the rectory and surrounding area where Lin lives in a small town in Minnesota to reveal the character s worries Lin s emotional journey will easily resonate with modern readers as an historical and contemporary tale Tricia Dower

Becoming Lin3. Book becoming nicole 5 stars I liked much of the book the core storyline of a woman in the 60 s questioning her life as a pastor s wife questioning her beliefs questioning gender rights questioning her own position in the world I enjoyed the fractured form to the narrative But the middle sagged for me the pacing off the narrative details uneven There were also a couple threads that were unresolved for me Despite this I enjoyed the novel and its candid exploration of women s rights Tricia Dower Eager to escape the meager existence that surrounds her Linda Wise dives head first into a life with a newly ordained minister Though she doesn t know much about what it s like being a married woman she s willing to give her marriage everything she s got Granted she can t quite forget about the circumstances that have brought her to where she is now Nevertheless she refuses let others dictate what it is she should or shouldn t do. Become linux administrator I love the fact that Becoming Lin takes place in the same universe as Stony River Quite a few of the characters we meet in the first book make their way into this one While this book is a standalone it does provide references to events that took place in the first book In a sense this is a continuation of that book yet it holds up all its own giving us a further glimpse into Linda s chaotic life. Book becoming a book in 2024 Linda is a woman who s suffered so much She s traumatized by the events that took place during her youth though she does her best to hide it Through every turn of the page we get to see vulnerabilities and her insecurities Deep inside she wants to be strong She wants to be than her husband thinks she is Yet her past often catches up with her at the most inopportune times. Becoming Lin kindle cloud Tricia is such a wonderful storyteller She s given us a story that takes place in what is now a bygone era painting such vivid pictures of the people places the culture and attitudes that people had back then Looking at the way things are now and how they were then it s sometimes mind boggling at how turbulent life was back then Every little thing a person did was heavily scrutinized Ideals and morals were also strongly upheld during this time period Life had a way of turning and heading in unexpected directions something the author shows us as Linda s new life unfolds throughout the story itself. Become lenire provider If you haven t had the chance to read the first book I recommend you do It ll give you a little insight in regards to some events that are mentioned in this story A truly captivating story Becoming Lin is definitely a story that will stick with you long after you ve read the book Tricia Dower Thank you to Tricia for continuing with the Linda Wise character from her book Stony River As she matures away from her NJ home we are entertained and educated on the history of the times and on Linda s growth as a wife mother and woman and friend I found myself talking out loud to the book especially to express my upset to R That happens when I get caught up in the story and characters While I am not a great review writer I would like to say that I did enjoy this book very much and have recommended this book to friends and will continue to do so Now I will look at reading the short stories collection Silent Girl Tricia Dower I was so captivated by Becoming Lin that I fought to resist the urge to read it at one sitting Instead I savoured each phrase each page remembering where and who I was at the time of its setting Tricia Dower managed to capture the mood of the times through an empathetic lens no heroes no villains just complex characters with strengths and frailties wrestling with truths and choices in uncertain times Touching and compelling Becoming Lin is a must read Tricia Dower One of my favourite books so far this year and Dower s best book yet Read my review on my blog Tricia Dower A tale of transformation in a time of chaos It s 1965 Twenty two year old Linda Wise despairs of escaping her overprotective parents and her hometown where far too many know she was sexually assaulted as a teenager Deliverance arrives in the form of marriage to the charismatic twenty six year old Ronald Brunson a newly ordained Methodist minister who ignites her passion for social justice Ron tells her war and racial discrimination are symptoms of the moral rot destroying the country conjuring up something dark and rancid in her mind thrilling in its wickedness He sweeps her away from Stony River New Jersey to serve with him at a church in a speck on the map prairie town in Minnesota What lies ahead for her over the next seven years is the subject of Tricia Dower s penetrating study of a marriage and a woman s evolving sense of self as she confronts the trauma that keeps her from her future unfettered self BECOMING LIN evokes the turbulent era of Freedom Riders for civil rights Vietnam war resistance the US government s war against the resisters sisterhood and the push for equal rights for women new age metaphysics motivational psychology and the unraveling of the traditional marriage contract an era that resonates today in persistent racism and sexism perpetual war and wide reaching government surveillance Becoming Lin.
