The book asks how we might rethink medicine and capitalism in democratic ways It aims to transform Heidegger s work in light of his troubling politics to produce a democratic social theory of human difference Heidegger and the Politics of DisablementI am really grateful to Abrams for doing the rigorous philosophical work of fleshing out a strong feeling I also had while reading Heidegger that his Heidegger s objection to what he calls the metaphysics of objective presence in favor of a focus on the first person ontic experience of day to day life offers the potential to radically affirm all varieties of embodiment This feeling took the form of some hasty and vigorous marginalia about Oliver Sacks Awakenings in my copy of Being and Time.

This book presents the early existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger as a way to reformulate academic disability studies and activist disability politics It redresses the almost categorical neglect of human difference in the philosophy of Heidegger It proceeds by applying a revised version of his phenomenology to social policy aimed to get disabled persons to work and to methods in rehabilitation science intended to be client friendly Phenomenological philosophy is extended to the topic of disability while at the same time two key concerns facing disability studies are the roles of capitalism in disablement and of medical practice in the lives of disabled persons. Book Heidegger and the Politics of disablement model By reframing disability as a lived way of being in the world rather than bodily malfunction right around the part where Heidegger gets started talking about hammers and eyeglasses To me each of Sacks anecdotes of neuropathology is an opportunity to expand our concept of human consciousness and displace the abstract model of subjectivity against which human beings are so often measured It seems clear to me that Abrams is working from a similar intuition or lighting flash. Book Heidegger and the Politics of disablement insurance I find that philosophical core of this book to be quite urgent and persuasive along with a couple of Abrams big far reaching points 1 While every model of human experience is a sociological phenomenon the existential structure of being i. Book Heidegger and the Politics of disablement benefit e the centrality of care or concern is not in this sense subjectivity and the formation of personhood and the concepts of ability and disability are as Abrams writes downstream of the fundamental lived reality of being Perhaps in this sense one must already be persuaded of the Heideggerian thesis to be on board with Abrams argument 2 The subsequentness of these category formations along with the way that they have for centuries excludes the disabled demonstrates the need for a radically inclusive new approach. PDF Heidegger and the Politics of disablement in education The second half of the book is largely sociological in character placing it somewhat beyond my disciplinary apprehension But the philosophical work in the first half is quite deliberate and thoughtful. Heidegger and the Politics of disablementbus My one pointed complaint is with Abrams quite perfunctory engagement with posthumanism which does not in my view do justice to the way that the cruel exclusiveness of the category humanity is central to the posthumanist critique of anthropocentrism Yet in reading this short book it also became clear to me why some in disability studies might be reluctant to dispense with the human label rather than expanding it to encapsulate a radically broad variety of personhoods In this view questioning the value of personhood has a philosophical category could easily be seen as a quite privileged move coming from someone who has not seen their personhood systematically denied or undermined by the dominant political and economic powers I will be quite sincerely treading carefully on these issues moving forward English
