Lightspeed magazine january 2016 epub archive Y Yang s Secondhand Bodies which was fantastic Highly recommended though possible TW for a highly emotionally abusive protagonist Not rating because I didn t read the rest of the issue English I read the novelette Beyond the Heliopause by Keith Brooke and Eric Brown I found it to be very good English Secondhand Bodies JY YangSci fi horror Medical science has progressed a lot in this future All kinds of ailments can be cured or at least ameliorated But our main character no matter what she does ends up with a body that just keeps getting a bit pudgy It s in her DNA The solution she believes is to turn to an illegal body swap Luckily her cousin knows just the doctor A complication arises though when she sees the client who s willing to pay for her body She s instantly smitten with the gorgeous womanThe way things progress is interesting and awful The true horror here is not the technology or even the misuse of technology but the terrible callous cruelty of humans Well done English My favorite story was The Savannah Liars Tour by Will McIntosh Lovely and touching It s the inspiration for the beautiful cover art by Galen Dara. Science fiction fantasy lightspeed magazine january 2016 value The best part about Beyond the Heliopause by Keith Brooke and Eric Brown was the relationship between Suzanne and her father The worst was the relationship between her and her ex The actual science fiction was pretty silly English Overall 3 starsKate Bachus Pinono Deep 3 starsOn a strange planet or possibly a very exotic future earth a ship hunting some whale like creatures is stuck in the ice The first thing that struck me while reading was that it reminded me of the recent movie In the Heart of the Sea I haven t actually read Moby Dick so I can make no comparison there I don t mean that in a negative way only that I found them atmospherically similar The ship the dirt the big sea monsters etc The ending was a bit abrupt but otherwise an all right adventure story. Lightspeed magazine january 2016j john lewis 5 starsIn Secondhand Bodies we see a future where body swapping and body renewal is commonplace at least among the rich people It s a tale of two women supposed to switch bodies but who fall in love with each other instead or do they There s a message in it about body beauty standards and I liked the way none of the characters were really likeable but still made an interesting story Enjoyable though it didn t quite go the way I first hoped it would. Lightspeed magazine january 2016h head Jason Gurley The Dark Age 5 starsA team of astronauts are to be put in sleeping pods as their ship travels for than a hundred years The Dark Age is the story about them saying goodbye to their families families who will grow up grow old and die while they sleep I loved this story Granted there s several things not explained and I suspect the world would not have worked in a longer story But as it is it s emotional and you feel for all the characters and it made me cry a little. Lightspeed magazine january 2016i cover 5 starsA journalist travels to the outer rim of our solar system to see what it is her ex husband has discovered there Something that ll change the world I didn t really like this one It s not poorly written but it has a religious theme which just didn t work for me Mostly because of my own view on religion It was still an interesting read and will probably be liked by others Will McIntosh The Savannah Liars Tour 3. Lightspeed magazine january 2016 pdf 75 starsIn a world where you can talk to deceased persons through cryo a man is torn between his dead first wife and his second living wife I liked this story it was sweet and while short still manages to tell you a lot about the dynamics between the three main characters BUT the first half of the story was also very confusing It took longer than I wanted to figure out what was actually going on and how the world worked Leena Krohn Gorgoniods 2 starsThis short talks about mathematical creatures named Gorgonoids and what defines life Subject is interesting but the story overall is very confusing I m not sure I fully understood it. Lightspeed magazine january 2016fiction 5 starsA hunter and a maiden both try to find a unicorn before the other to either save it or end it I really liked this one The language was beautiful and the setting world a nice blend between urban and high fantasy Ending was a bit abrupt though I wanted to know . Lightspeed magazine january 2016c cover 5 starsTwo old werewolves encounter an enemy from their past and a hunt for revenge is on I m not very fond of werewolf stories and to be honest this one bored me I didn t particularly like the voices of the protagonists either though I suppose it is nice to read about 70 aged characters for a change. Lightspeed magazine january 2016b bullet 5 starsA man working in a factory on the moon has to live through sabotage war and love I found it a bit confusing in the beginning but I liked the second half well enough Thought provoking though not sure I liked the style of language. Lightspeed magazine january 2016h history And then a bunch of reviews and interviews I m not going to rate those Duh English A very disappointing issue of a magazine that is usually consistent in quality The reprints are the best of this issue s fiction offerings Leena Krohn s Gorgonoids is a good primer for her work if you are unfamiliar with her. Lightspeed magazine january 2016k cover The new works range from meh to ugh The best one is probably Will McIntosh s story The Savannah Liars Tour because the title concept is a fun idea Otherwise the story predictable and excessively sentimental.
