Tales from the Insulan EmpireAuthor s grasp of language is rudimentary at best Reads like it was written by a 6th grader 76 This is a composite novel set in a magical reinterpretation of twentieth century eastern Europe I think The Insulan Empire of the title is the USSR but I m not sure It seems inspired by magical realism and Russian folk tales. Tales from the insulan empirefall 2 In my opinion this novel suffers from constant over explanation It starts right in the preface which explains the whole cosmogony its content would have probably been best left for the reader to reconstruct through clues left throughout the novel Same issue with an excerpt of a fictional summary of an article of law about the rights of users of magic which appears to be mostly there to show that users of magic are well accepted in society In other words it s like the writer s notes have been left by accident in the final product. Pdf tales from the insulan empire pdfcoffee I don t think over explanation is really an accident though it s there to solve a grave problem namely the lack of a clear hook in almost every story In fact sometimes what allows the reader to understand what was the point of the story is at the end of the story where it s all laid out For example in Preview Chapter Rasa why does a character only resurrects some persons and not others Well this question is asked at the end and just after the solution is given it s because it s not really resurrection but healing very close to death Cool but I would have liked so some sort of narrative tension Since it s the first story in which the word communist appears I initially thought it was about the party or something. Tales from the insulan empireh review A large chunk of each story is dedicated to exposing worldbuilding which is probably what drowns out the narrative tension Once you find the narrative tension you may realize that almost all stories besides the parasitic desire to expose worldbuilding are actually generated by the following schema loved ones of the nuclear family lovers wife husband children harsh life conditions very often war actual or potential death sadness excessive reaction management of the reaction by society For example the wife of a man dies he grieves and is overwhelmed by household work he sees his children playing rough he punishes them with so much anger that he actually turns into a bear then he is judged and becomes a handbook case for law students A strength of One Thousand Years of Solitude is that it manages to weave magic into everyday life and may be good bad remarkable unremarkable clear cut or ambiguous Here drama is almost constant and it gets a bit tiring. Tales from the insulan empirejack The best story is the one that avoid almost every of the issues I ve outlined Birthdates The hook takes too much time to come but other than that it s quite good It s once again about magic causing problems but it s not exactly due to death it s just part of normal life The power is very simple too it s about seeing the birthdate of everything It s included in an interesting setting The resolution isn t spectacular at all and that s actually a good thing like in Chekhov s short stories A similar one is A Piece of their Soul but it s once again about the death of a loved one and it suffers from over explanation Not that stories about the death of a loved one should be forbidden but with this novel there s an over saturation. Pdf tales from the insulan empire book Please note that the author is also the moderator of a writing subreddit so I suspect the 1 star reviews to be from disgruntled users of that sub This novel is priced accordingly to its length and it s not Fifty Shades of Grey either it doesn t deserve the lowest rating possible 76
