What s a baby goat called Or a baby panda In this collection of mountain creatures and their young Julia Groves distinctive art style captures each animal s unique beauty Animal Babies on the Mountain Read Not reviewed Board Book The colors and forms of these adult and baby animals are eye catching The author illustrator introduces young readers to six different animals including an alpaca a lynx an eagle a panda a goat and a wolf I didn t see what they had in common being mountain animals until I looked harder at the title and then at the back of the book which might mean caregivers or teachers might need to explain what the animals have in common or they might prefer to have youngsters figure it out for themselves Or maybe they like me just need to slow down when starting the book The unusual nature of some of the animals and their names may make this one tough for little ones as would the fact that the names are written in cursive rather than print But for other precocious children it might be neat to be able to amaze others with the fact that they know that a baby alpaca is called a cria I must confess that I didn t know that Perhaps this board book would be best used as a lap read or shared reading in some form Board Book Sweet artwork and design but it starts with a very difficult pairing alpaca cria I think this makes it difficult for the intended audience Board Book
