Kindle Astounding Science Fiction, October 1943 copper E van Vogt started out slow with a passe style but got a little better gradually when an alien man and his enemy a human woman get stranded together on a desolate world not as interesting as it sounds I d only give it 2 or 3 stars Fifty Million Monkeys by Raymond F Jones was much better about a team of scientists trying to solve a dangerous space drive problem with trial and error methods multiplied by a precursor of an A. Book Astounding Science Fiction, October 1943 bookpedia I machine though it got a little stodgy in a few spots 4 stars Paradox Lost by Fredric Brown is a funny story of a student pulled into another dimension or something as he day dreams through his professor s boring lecture Very amusing and well written 5 stars The Proud Robot by Lewis Padgett Henry Kuttner was also very funny but didn t sustain the humorous tone as well as Paradox Lost so 4 stars Willie by Frank Belknap Long about a time traveler returning to his city of origin to find it inhabited by savages and robots was even worse than The Storm in my humble opinion 1. Astounding Science Fiction, October 1943books 5 2 stars The best was saved for last in Symbotica by Eric Frank Russell featuring his regular android character Jay Score with a crew investigating a planet near Rigel They get embroiled with natives and hostile vegetation It s a very well written readable suspenseful first contact story 5 stars I give the whole issue 3. Astounding Science Fiction, October 1943v2 E van VogtFifty Million Monkeys by Raymond F JonesThe Proud Robot by Lewis PadgettSymbiotica by Eric Frank RussellParadox Lost by Fredric BrownWillie by Frank Belknap LongTidal Waves nonfiction by Malcolm JamesonI found all but one of these pretty good and it s interesting to see how pulp writers 70 years ago treated subjects like space travel and robots Even the one I thought was pretty bad Symbiotica was unintentionally funny Part of this was due to the use of 1940s slang most of which I could understand from old movies and context English
