A young man just turns sixteen and gets his driver license and now feels like he belongs. It’s a time when there are much fewer laws, much fewer police and many personal freedoms. The story runs from March 28th, 1960 to June 1961, when he graduates from Seton Hall, a Catholic high school. We learn a little bit about how life was during that period, the music, politics, culture and the family. Being a teenager was a lot different then compared to now, but also the same in a lot of ways. Getting your driver’s license was still a thrill and school was still a drag to a lot of kids. High school had its clicks and the invisible’s as I call them, still yearned to belong as it is today. Drinking, chasing girls, doing drugs and smoking cigarettes were pretty much as it is today also. Parenting was lot different then, kids were to be seen and not heard. The Little league had only just begun and there were no soccer teams or pre schools to send your kids to. Kids pretty much were on their own in the blue collar environment that this young man grew up in. The music scene was quiet during that period, at least on the surface. He listened to mostly black rock and roll artistes, being a greaser or a hood as some people referred to that group of teenagers. He had no idea what was taking place in other sections of the world or even in the U.S. Elvis Presley was just getting out of the Army and was still writing songs and performing. But on Aug. 1 St. of that year an unknown group that would change music history, the Beatles, would give their first live performance. Bob Dylan and folk music was being played but he was oblivious to it. However in three years music would be changed forever. There was no internet, cable TV, no personal computers, cell phones, iPods, spell checkers and gas was.23 cents a gallon. The minimum wage was $1.25 per hour and the opportunities were few and far between in Long Island. In the blue collar world your best hope was to join a union preferably the electrical and you were set for life. Chapter 1 – Getting my driver’s licenseIt was one of those cold bitter Long Island nights, in a small town called Lindenhurst, NY, March 28 Th., 1960. The winter had been brutal that year on the east coast. As it turned out it was the eight coldest in N.Y. city history. That March another historical event was happening that would change history forever. President Eisenhower had just given the okay for the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. This would become a mess that the next President would have to deal with. But very few people in this little town cared much about it.Lindenhurst was a blue collar town that had about twenty five thousand people and one black family or as they were called back then “colored” families. There were no laws against colored people moving anywhere, but it was an unwritten rule that you didn’t dare sell your house to a colored family because the value of your home would go down. And your neighbors would bring out the pitchforks.Chapter 3 – Fight nightThe week passed quickly to my displeasure, and before I know its Friday night. I don’t want to be in a gang fight but I still want to be one of the guys, what to do.
