Unbearably innocent and moving child s perspective on leukaemia imagination can set us free. Cappy takes a while to reveal to the reader his situation but there are clues He needs special food is not allowed to do things most children are play with dogs has to regularly check his body for bruises He wears a cap to cover his head and has hospital visits all the time What is unusual is his sudden vision of a flying whale One who loves eating up Cappy s scrummy pills and wants to take him flying off with him on adventures Nobody else can see him. Cappy s illness comes to light and his acceptance of it is heart rending seeing his separated parents and grandma s dealing with it through his eyes will affect adult readers than children Cappy is curious questioning naive and so totally believable as a young boy coping with a life threatening illness that I couldn t help but sob This may upset families reading this together who aren t expecting such a subject this is not a toddler s picture book it s for older readers parents teachers It will be wanted and incredibly useful for families going through leukemia treatment hospitals and schools. I didn t feel that there was much to set this in Ukraine besides occasional character names it could have been any child in any country The translation is excellent the pictures rather beautiful with the patterned whale and limited colour palette muting the pictures and making this less brash than books for younger readers listeners. It takes around an hour to read so not for one bedtime and it will be of benefit if it is not read solo but with parents teachers adults there to discuss it with their children.
