Miss Mattie liked Lilly All the teachers liked Lilly But when they discovered that at the age of 14 Lilly was going to have a baby the righteously indignant people who controlled the destinies of the Crackell family stepped in and proceeded heartlessly to ruin Lilly s life without doing anything about the appalling circumstances that had made her condition possible This is the eloquent story of Lilly s struggle to have and keep the children she adored and her tragic attempts to give them the food clothing and decent home that she herself had never had Lilly CrackellSo here s the problem I really liked most of this book I really appreciated the empathetic look at the vicious cycle of poverty The unwed mother was portrayed in an incredibly sympathetic light The book is well written I cared about the characters It would have been four stars easy maybe four and a half but then there were those two or three chapters in the middle that were so mind numbingly racist that I can t in good conscience really recommend it to anybody It s interesting I think if you step back to notice that it s only the characters who are shockingly racist while the narrator gives hints of perhaps disagreeing with them but if so the disagreement is so subtle that I can t swear it s actually present It s a product of its time certainly but unfortunately for the rest of the book I think it should probably stay in its time Lilly Crackell
