They are about real life and experience. However, the tales are also about truth, lies and betrayal. Comedy sits alongside pathos and tragedy, sometimes uncomfortably. They are fragments of the authors memories of those years but, quite possibly, they will also be part of the collective memory of other working class children of that era.

Straight From The Ragman's Horse: Tales of Childhood True and FalseThis book is captivating So well written and remembered Each episode and anecdote is fascinating and I would love to sit down and listen in person perhaps a public talk to Roberts past I live in the working class part of the North East all my life and was raised slightly later than this gentleman but I can only say that he has been there and seen it It s not only an emotional outpouring and therapy for him to share and make sense of his childhood and later shocking discoveries in adulthood but also a spot on and brilliant picture of a working class North East England town and upbringing I have to add here that I would not have judged his mother so harshly because I would assume her life as a single parent especially in those days.

Especially after her spouses death would have left her emotionally vulnerable and empty in many ways She was probably a woman who fellIn love and the result was the author Who judging by his clearly amazing creative writing skills she has done a good job on Any negative toxic comments left on here like in every case are from jealousunkind dissatisfied or lazy individuals who are not only incapable of any creativity themselves but importantly of supporting and caring about their fellow man disgusting Extremely Well done Robert Fenwick and long may you write God Bless 94 I honestly think that before you attempt a critique of an author s work you should first have some mastery of the language JasonB may claim to be a prolific reader but passible hardly indicates he has full control As a Northerner I found Robert Fenwick s book both fascinating and authentic In the first chapter he builds a framework for his subsequent tales by setting the precise location house street neighbourhood and town and era the 1950s and 60s Then we re off on a romp through his childhood and adolescence with stories of comic wit from a child s point of view clear insight and finally deep pathos from the perspective of an older man looking back with some candour. These tales are a true picture of what life was like for working class kids sixty odd years ago I know I was there too 94
