Figures of deathdream 1974 Like Dick Francis the author sets it in a world somewhat inaccessible to the general reader and then brings that world to life Dick Francis was a jockey and a pilot so his novels were always very realistic about horse racing and flying Paul Sweeting is a fund manager and actuary and similarly sets the novel in the modern financial world It clearly benefits greatly from the author s long career in that world and his training as an actuary unless they are already a fund manager or an actuary they will learn a lot about finance at the same time probably without even realising it It is very much to be hoped that the author continues with a sequel Figures of Death An uncharacteristically recent book from Lume Endeavor press who tend to specialize in dusting the cobwebs off much older books this one nevertheless has that tell tale style and pace and Britishness they usually publish A very wealthy man and his much younger wife are dead in a car crash The circumstances are suspicious Both of them were involved with some elaborate insurance and actuary businesses And so the investigation begins The novel is so modern and hip aspiring it even features Asperger s spectrum The book alternates perspectives for a balanced look into the decisively uninteresting world of actuaries and insurance you know the figures in the title Other than that the book has all the right components you d normally see in a murder mystery thriller suspense romance etc I kinda sorta predicted the killer but not because it was made overtly obvious I m just a genius lol and I liked the way they got there so there were still a few surprises Not the most thrilling of thrillers unless you re really into finance insurance actuary business etc but objectively well done and entertaining enough All you can ask for from a freebie really Figures of Death And anyway no one got killed over an actuarial model. Figures of deathef This was the first novel I have ever read on a Kindle so congratulations to the author for creating a novel of sufficient interest to force me to overcome that psychological barrier. Figures of deadpool x men I m also an Actuary and the world of pension buyout is my professional area of focus indeed full disclosure I know the author well which increased the novel s interest for me but Paul Sweeting does as far as I can judge an excellent job of explaining the setting to the lay reader Indeed if anything the novel is even about cars where the author is also clearly an expert and the explanations of the mechanics integral to the plot a subject where I was in contrast completely ignorant were certainly very clear and comprehensible and added an unusual and interesting touch to the novel Against that at times there was perhaps a little too much mundane detail about car names road systems and paying for taxis albeit this did reflect the autistic nature of one of the key characters from who s point of view the third person narration is often told And Paul does create two memorable lead characters going against the stereotypes in the hard drinking shambolic actuary Tom and the lead Detective Inspector Steve Norfolk who has all the logical and organisational strengths and the lack of people skills of a typical actuary. Figure of death kaw I have to say I pegged the murderer from early on as there were lots of clues But then as the middle part of the novel progressed my confidence in my verdict weakened as Sweeting successfully throws in lots of red herrings actually including the whole area of actuarial modelling issues and potential other motives and murderers. Figures of deathegg.world Indeed no spoiler alert needed my personal favourite suspect was the lead detective himself or possibly his daughter due to this giveaway line It was part of a project his daughter Tania had undertaken to educate him or accurately hard working self motivated full of ideas and blessed with a range of other gifts that made him slightly annoying to all those who worked with him He was not disliked rather there was a feeling that perhaps he could tone himself down a bit And perhaps complement his undoubted technical prowess with some soft skills.
