Cardiff The Biography epubor Join author Dic Mortimer as he explores the history of one of Britain s most fascinating and vibrant cities exploring the people and events that made the Welsh capital what it is today Cardiff The BiographyBrilliant must read if you re interested in Cardiff or even if you re not History and commentary uninhibited by the sort of restraints which academic allegiance puts on people Begins with a chronology which encompasses much of the history of Wales the bit which has wider appeal than just Cardiff very funny and acute definitely not what you got taught at school The rest of the book takes areas of Cardiff and describes them and their history in depth So much information as well as very perceptive comments you are bound to learn something new from this It is very readable and perhaps deliberately not academic but an index and some sources would be very useful additions The frightening thing is that this book appeared less than three years ago and already a number of the buildings and features mentioned singled out for praise even have been demolished There a few things I would disagree with e. Book Cardiff The biography pdf while accepting the general point about unncessary Anglicisation of place names in Cardiff I think there s a case to be made for saying that versions such as Lisvane and Maindy actually reflect the original Welsh dialect of the area rather than imposing something foreign The author might or might not be glad to know that the university building in Newport Road which he believes to be student accommodation is in fact not that soon it might be the only building in the area which isn t but houses all the displaced back room functions from the university s main site in Cathays There is a great deal of wisdom in this book sadly not shared by anyone in power in Cardiff and certainly not by anyone in the planning department Read it 240
