Renowned for his ability to bring the past back to life through his works Dr Junichi Saga takes us this time to the Japanese lakeside hamlet of Anju where his father had lived for several years as a child in an old thatched roof farmhouse teeming with family friends and for much of the year seasonal workers Weaving together his father s richly detailed reminiscences the author recreates for us a Japan that has all but vanished presenting a moving and often very funny human drama as well as an ethnographic folkloric treasure trove Despite the separation in miles and years readers will surely feel a closeness to the remarkable little boy whose story is told here A must read for anyone interested in getting to know the REAL old Japan just as it once was Remembrance of Village Days Past Reminiscences of a Childhood in Early 20th Century JapanWhile not as fantastic as Memories of Silk and Straw Remembrance of Village Days Past by Junichi Saga has the same charm and atmosphere This one is personal in its scope and outlines the author s boyhood days in a Japanese village Born in 1941 he had an adventurous and tumultuous life on which he has written several books Saga s father had gone off to Russia to practice medicine and it does not look like he is returning any time soon So his mother had to stay with her parents which allowed everyone to disrespect both his mother and Junichi himself He especially had tales about his step great grandmother who hated his guts However despite this situation Junichi had a good start in life and was able to get an education The book describes daily life at his grandparents place in detail It was quite interesting to see that education was already being considered important even for girls despite the general poverty during this time The author s mother was also a powerful character and was actively working towards leading an independent life due to the lack of respect she and her son faced at her parents household The patriarchal mindset comes through very strongly in this memoir Apart from this snippets about farming silkworms ghost festivals a visit to the temple etc was intriguing because none of these things exist today or at least not in the same form Childhood was so very different in those days Difficult for sure but also less complicated Or maybe that s the distance in time talking It can t have been fun to have been a child during WW2 in Japan Wonderful book and I mean to read all of Saga s works Kindle Edition
