Kelly Police are baffled when two Canadian grey she wolves are stolen from a small Dorset zoo, only to turn up again seven months later, both she wolves having given birth in their absence. This novel is set in the early 19890s against the background of foxhunting in the New Forest. Hunt saboteur Mike Sanders has a spark of an idea that quickly grows into an obsession. He hopes to put a spotlight on the plight of the fox; his goal is to outlaw foxhunting in Great Britain. But will the road to good intentions end in disaster? Wox the fox While including other perspectives and discussing other aspects of the story Wox is mostly the story of Arthur Burtle beginning and ending with him and taking place during his time as a free man Most of the other character development and plot points that are shared that take place away from him are included for the purpose of setting up his interactions with them later Arthur is the one who ties everything together and as his story the book works There were a couple things that I m not sure would actually work such as the hybridization if they were taken out and examined on their own but the author presents them in a way that you don t question them as you are reading One thing that was very interesting while reading this book is that while the main focus is Arthur at no time is he presented as the protagonist in any traditional sense I never found myself rooting for him at any point Hopefully this stance was taken deliberately to add to a sense of discomfort for the reader because it is a very provocative way to write however it may have served a much less philosophical end The description on the back does warn about violent sexual content and that is not an understatement There are multiple scenes of violence and sexual assault Further these are scenes that would not be included in such detail if the narrative focused on another character It s entirely possible that the framing of the story was a justification of being able to include the scenes than anything else reading through the book during this section did give the feeling that the story was in some ways in serving the inclusion sexually violent content than the inclusion of the scenes was in service of telling the larger story I think telling this same story with of a focus on Detective Inspector Mullins would be a popular story that would reach people and it could have even been reworked to follow the foxhunt saboteurs as the principle characters and been a comfortable story with a still anti hero feel but those are not the book the author chose to write He chose to write his story for a smaller group of people to enjoy I would say that if you are uncomfortable with reading a depiction of rape then this story is not for you If that isn t going to put you off then there is a decent story here and the experience of reading a book without a central protagonist was interesting English
