Doctor Who: Time Reaver (The Tenth Doctor Adventures, #1.2) By Jenny T. Colgan
Doctor who 2023
An interstellar transit hub with a reputation for lawlessness The story concerns smugglers importing a particularly nasty weapon accurately a torture device that can be attached to a weapon with an octopus like alien as the main villain It would be expensive to do well on TV taking advantage of the fact it only has to be realised on audio. Doctor who season 14 Colgan also seems to have a better handle on Donna than Fitton did making her less of an interchangeable companion here than in the previous story In particular some of the banter we often saw between the two leads on TV is reproduced here allowing of Donna s distinctive personality to come across as well as showing off her softer side Tennant of course is superb and there s a good turn from the supporting actors as well three of whom also appeared in other roles in the TV series. Doctor who's daughter The story is something of a change of pace from the usual monster fare with a good mix of action and character oriented moments as well as some of the humour of the RTD era As with the prior episode the plot isn t particularly deep not least because of the 60 minute run time but it s a good evocation of the fourth season of the new series without feeling as if it s just retreading old ground 80 Another fun one so great to hear 10 and Donna together again 80 Another great audio book Since I just reviewed one of these I ll skip all the stuff about why I love these audio adventures so much and just get right to the story. Doctor strange science fiction In Time Reaver the Doctor and Donna find themselves on a planet that is basically one big travel stop Think Traverse Town in Kingdom Hearts or Central Station in NYC but with Aliens and made entirely out of mechanical parts. Doctor who season 26 As usual what should be a quick trip for the Doctor and Donna turns into a life or death situation when they meet Cora a young girl on the run from some creepy octopus pirate guy Cora has a time reaver a gun that slows down time for the person who is shot with it and the octo pirate wants it for himself The adventure that follows is incredibly sad and makes you ask yourself what you would do if your planet and everyone you love were on the brink of death Since the story is so short I don t want to give too much away So I ll leave it at this If you are a Whovian and a 10th Doctor fan give this a listen 80 While I don t think a lot of the story is sticking in my head this happens occasionally when I listen and drive there was definitely good stuff here I mean beyond just a new Donna Doctor story starring Tate and Tennant What struck me most was how well this adventure highlighted Donna s compassion It s not something you think about as much with her not compared to her yelling at the world and being witty and everything but Donna has always proven herself to be deeply compassionate I like how much this story showcased that. Doctor whom I suspect that three new Donna Doctor stories aren t gonna be enough for me 80 Not bad Not my favorite This one did not ring as true to the tenth doctor as the other audio s in this series and that bothered me a bit but still worth listening to 80 So I m wondering is this the first time we ve ever had Donna written by a woman writer Jenny did a wonderful job This was a full on science fiction epic with bizarre aliens and alien races on the brink of destruction and a massive space station A story that worked very well on audio because it had such a big scale and no need to worry about the CGI budget Though I am still sad we didn t actually get to see Catherine Tate in the wenches outfit There was also a lot of fun banter and a lot of fantastic lines for Donna Some sad and kinda terrifying moments too Brilliant all round Though on a 2nd listen I did end up thinking Dear Gods Tennant s doctor is an insufferable twat Every other line 80 Time modulators in a time machine are you nuts It s like forks in a microwave 80 aww oh Ten always jumping in front of the gun 80
