Jokes ApartHow Did I Get Here? By Julius Agwu ebook 9781483988887 Jokes ApartHow Did I Get Here? Stand up comedy has become big and serious business in Nigeria and Julius Chinweikpe Agwu aka Julius DGenius Agwu is one of the leading lights of that industry. Born in 1973 in Choba to Mary Welebor and Augustine Wamadi Agwu; a petty trader mother and a bricklayer father who were imbued with the gift of comedy, Julius was a precocious child who displayed early, the gifts of dance, acting and comedy. Jokes ApartHow Did I Get Here is therefore, at once , the story of a family and their son, Julius. It is a chronicle of a young mans journey of discovery, his coming of age and realisation of God given potential. Here is Julius DGenius Agwu: unedited and unardoned as he chronicles in lucid prose and unaffected narrative his journey of hope and determination from the rustic village of Choba to the glittering stages of Lagos, London and New York. Julius Agwus autobiography will make you laugh and cry as you read about his days of hunger and how he squatted his way through Lagos, propelled by unequivocal belief in self, his talent, and God. This is a narrative turgid with hope and self belief in a human beings potential to lift himself out of the depths of deprivation to the peak of fame while disdaining the feral birds of doubts and disappointments beating around him with mad feathers.

I m really glad to have been introduced to Julius Agwu but I didn t really enjoy this book and skipped through some bits of it It feels very unedited and the writing is very ordinary Way too many paragraphs start with Now There is no overarching goal or purpose to the story really just a list of event after event It s like someone telling you their life story at a dinner party because they can t stop talking about themselves but you kinda wish they would ebook This was a somewhat difficult read for me but I have to say it s the first autobiography from Nigeria that I ve ever read I think some of the difficulties I encountered were to do with my perspective middle class white Australian and not familiar with Julius Agwu s work than with the actual book I do think it could have been edited with a firmer hand but I think it s meant to be a very relaxed and conversational style If you are a fan of Agwu s you may really enjoy it Again I think cultural differences may play a big part in my rating for this book as I have no idea if this style including the testimonials that form the second half of the book is the standard in Nigeria Overall Agwu comes across as a hard working determined man who has done and continues to do a lot of good for his community ebook
