Charlotte knollys Charlotte is endearing and fun as a heroine a tiny eight year old with a penchant for disappearing into her daydreams Her adventures in Cymru are interspersed with scenes of her mother and brother on their own adventure in our world as they try the decipher what s happened to Charlotte and her father I really liked this It added extra depth to the story and having another set of characters with different less complete knowledge of the situation trying to accomplish similar goals developed the tension well. Charlotte gilvarry Unfortunately I found the writing impossible to get on board with and it distracted so much from what was great about the book that it was difficult for me to enjoy even to finish I get the feeling the author saw the story in a filmic visual way when they were writing so that s how I tried to picture it as I read but in trying to capture that visual the writing has been bogged down There are too many descriptions of little inconsequential bits of motion and action and too many tiny tangents snippets of conversation asides that I found the action really stunted It even occurs in intense and climactic scenes severely damaging the tension for me The tone in any given scene is all over the place characters joking suddenly when they re in grave peril etc But it s the dialogue I found hardest to enjoy and there s a lot of it So much of the speech is pointless The characters talk around in circles They say contradictory things they make statements they dismiss or retract a moment later None of this moves the story forward or develops the characters at all.
