Best short stories I enjoyed these short stories from various writers Each story has a different voice The following stories touched me the most The Island by Grace Li I had tears in my eyes when Cindy first talked to her elderly mom over the phone with hostile tone like a teenager and was worried about Mrs Katz s isolation from her children and the world Mrs Katz s loneliness at old age living by herself after her husband died her fearfulness to the outside world and wanting to stay alive for her children all sounds heavy but the story was actually a delightful read through Mrs Katz interaction with her cat and the college kids coming to the island for a vacation I liked seeing young Justin s wisdom in enjoying hanging out with old people because of their tons of stories This story relates to people with grown kids or aged parents Eventually Mrs Katz was led out of door by her beloved cat and the college students who were helping her look for her cat It was the first time that she was stepped out after so many years A Short Ride to Mercy by Jim Gray this story is about the relationship between a dog and a man who was not a kind and mercy man when he was young The man s close relationship with his dog was described in moving details after the dog was diagnosed with cancer The man showed his passion and mercy through taking the dog for a trip to the lake where the dog and the man used to go before the man is to put the dog down It was particularly touching to see that the dog could no longer chase the ducks but wiggled his tail when seeing the ducks And it is heartbreaking to let go a beloved pet English
