They terrorized five Midwestern states and evaded the Pinkerton Detective Agency for some considerable time. Pinkerton was known to say, If I cant figure out how a crime was done, it was committed by the Renos. John Renos story is told here by the man who lived it. He was a very intelligent man and tells a cracking good story. Please understand that his version does not always square with the actual facts and his telling of the story makes him look like the victim than the perpetrator. In retyping this autobiography, I corrected spelling and changed some punctuation. I spaced the paragraphs differently to make them easier to read on an e reader. All of the terminology used around the time of the Civil War was left in place. The story itself is exactly as it was told back in 1879. If you are offended by Mark Twains work or the terminology used around and during the Civil War, please do not purchase this book. I did not update the word usages to match modern political correctness. This work is in the public domain. John Reno’s story was first edited by Robert W. Shields and later re edited by Loren W. Noblitt, local historian, with annotations, but copies of those books are rare and hard to find. I was hoping to make the story available to those interested in history, the history of crimes, or the Reno gang. 2016 is the sesquicentennial of the worlds first train robbery.
