He just does not seem to fit, he is afraid of women and intimidated by men. By accident he meets a charismatic woman, Katya, and his life is turned upside down, not only because he falls hopelessly in love and becomes completely under her control, but later, as a result of her dealings with organised crime. Tragedy and despair however have their counterpoise in hope and redemption through love.

This book is partly about transition the highs and the lows the triumphs and the disappointments It is also about attraction and how we have very little control over those whom we are destined to love It is also a story about isolation within society how three very different characters deal with it and how their interaction becomes toxic and fatal Surrounding the narrative of Michael s transition to Sarah is a story of murder and retribution The action is set in London in the 1980s a time when transgender women were less high profile than they are now The central character is Michael a lad from the Midlands who has little personality is painfully shy and with a very poor image of self He just does not seem to fit he is afraid of women and intimidated by men By accident he meets a charismatic woman Katya and his life is turned upside down not only because he falls hopelessly in love and becomes completely under her control but later as a result of her dealings with organised crime Tragedy and despair however have their counterpoise in hope and redemption through love Sarah A Transgender TaleA reasonably absorbing plot however the reading experience was marred for me by the poor copy editing the copious overuse and in many cases misuse of commas for which the author seems to display something of a fetish and the dialogue Whereas the protagonists dialogue is merely stilted the author seems blissfully unaware that people use contractions when speaking that of the antagonists is woeful The antagonists themselves are with the exception of Michael Sarah s parents one dimensional working class thug stereotypes that said the author did manage to make one of the chief villains seem rather human towards the end too little too late alas I d like to have given this three possibly four stars on the strength of the plot which I enjoyed greatly but ultimately this is a good tale poorly presented Sarah A Transgender Tale Very strange bookit does deal with gender dysphoria but not in any way I ve ever read before How Michael Sarah comes to be aware of it so late in life is not the way this happens in any such story or real life story It s good the the English national health system both treats the issue and provides the surgery as well It s just that this particular book is so jumbled up with other issues that to label it a transgender tale diminishes the issue so many face Just not really well done which is a shame as I have enjoyed other books by Ms Wyatt but can t recommend this one as a depiction of a real transgender story Sarah A Transgender Tale A very interesting story in which the transgender element while a big part of the story was not the only focus of it Michael s transformation into Sarah was controlled by Katya who was the central figure in the events that are described It is dark thriller that kept my attention Sarah A Transgender Tale
