Native Moments By Nic Schuck Paperback 1944781188 9781944781187 Fiction Native Moments Twenty year old Sanch Murray comes from a line of military men. His grandfather fought in WWII, his father in Vietnam and his older brother in the first Gulf War. Growing up, Sanch was expected to do the same. When his brother returns home after an injury suffered during a terrorist attack on his ship in the Yemen Sea, Sanch decides to do something different with his life. He just doesn’t know what. After the death of his brother from a heroin overdose, Sanch leaves for a surf trip to Costa Rica as a way to cope but also as a way to prolong making decisions about his adult life and sets out on a quixotic search for an alternative to the American Dream.Set in 1999 Costa Rica, Sanch Murray and his friend Jake Higdon wander the dirt roads of Tamarindo and surrounding areas chasing waves as a way to live out the romantic fantasy lifestyle of traveling surfers. Jake Higdon, six years Sanch’s senior, takes on the role of the wise leader and Sanch as his young apprentice. Sanch’s adventure leads to encounters with people who share world views he had never considered and could potentially shape his own changing perceptions about life. His existential adjustment gradually manifests through sometimes humorous episodes such as trying his hand as a matador at a road side rodeo or in his not so humorous battle with dysentery. Along his journey, Sanch befriends a shamanic traveler named Rob, young revolutionaries from Argentina, numerous expatriates from around the world trying to escape whatever it is that keeps chasing them and making them wanderers and a beautiful local girl named Andrea who Sanch suspects is a prostitute but can’t help falling for.
Book Native moments
I ve never once surfed I ve never been to Costa Rica But at times while reading Native Moments I felt like buying a board and heading south for a little adventure This book is deeper than just an escapist surfer novel though There s a richness and depth to the adventure A level of darkness with real consequences and no easy answers to the questions Sanch and Jake are trying answer on the trip I really enjoyed this book 9781944781187 More drugs women and surfing than wine women and song Native Moments is drug fueled existentialism Readers need to be prepared to question the established and expected social norms from the perspective of the young Sanch and Jake Their disillusionment and inebriated wandering are reminiscent of the post WWI expatriates who flocked to Europe. Native Moments booklet Both Sanch and Jake are battling internal demons but they maintain a sense of youth exuberance and hope Their travels take them physically away from pressing issues and decisions back home but they are still forced to deal with the raw emotions surrounding those issues Adulting can come with stress and uncertainty and Sanch and Jake are basically trying to runaway Peter Pan style. Native Moments literary techniques I received a complimentary copy of this book via Nerd Girl Official in exchange for my honest review 9781944781187 super entertaining if you ve ever backpacked around the americas as a youth this captures the entire spirit of it very funny and easy read 9781944781187
