Presents traditional sources about the disabled Biblical Midrashic Rabbinic and Halakhic Examines modern views theological implications and current programs Who Makes People Different Jewish Perspective on People with Disabilities My edition is from the 1980s so I don t know if this is an identical version It s a short nonfiction book that gathers a bunch of classic source texts and gives discussion questions for each sometimes I felt that the discussion questions were at the expense of analyzing the actual source It was interesting that midrashic sources were also included with an explanation of how midrashic sources often contradict each other etc fair enough. Book Who Makes People different?s I didn t expect present day terminology but the endless repetition of the disabled was a bit grating especially since I just read another Jewish disability book from the 1980s which didn t do that at all. People who have made a difference I was surprised to see intersex variations being considered in it Jewish law itself definitely treats them as disabilities especially if infertility is involved so I can certainly see the rationale behind it the text itself asked readers what they thought about this inclusion So that was interesting I m intersex disabled and have complicated feelings about this whole array of topics I liked the accessibility guidelines for synagogues sometimes sadly failed by my local synagogue almost 40 years later.
