Schtum! by P.J. Searle By P.J. Searle Kindle Edition Schtum! by P.J. Searle Tag along with Y. T. (yours truly), on a chaotic ramble through 1980s, South Londons lowlife – With narrative: –So ‘it was the best of times and it was the worst of times.’ I read that somewhere, or was it in a film? d’know – but that’s the point, I don’t know, and I don’t want to know. Thing is I’ve found a new item, could be a new exhibit, just have to wait and see, got it under my arm wrapped in newspaper, it lives. I haven’t a clue what it is. I found it under the arches of Embankment underground station. That’s where I am now – I go there sometimes. From Charring Cross station and on to the Embankment, one of my catchment areas, from midnight onwards, not many people about at that time, just half a dozen drunks, derelicts and one odd weirdo, that’s me – as I say, that’s where I am now. Y. T. has a hobby, an obsession… like an insanity, but lets not be too harsh, lets give him the benefited of the doubt. –So I join this little, rag tag assemblage of life’s flotsam, slowly down the escalator, like Alice don her rabbit hole, to the last train. –Item: a bag lady pushes past me, packed like a mule, smells like a mule. –Item: a teenager makes as to approach me. I avoid eye contact – boy/girl, who knows? Again that’s the draw, not knowing, not wanting to know, I don’t want to spoil it. –Item: a huddle of cardboard gently breathing, man? woman? child? beastie? God only knows, who wants to know anyway, certainly not me. Must press on – Are you coming?
