Meh This appears to be pieces of stories taken out of the middle of longer books It is stilted and choppy and out of context There are many great Christmas collections out there This is not one of them Hardcover It s basically impossible to rate a book of short stories with one rating I was disappointed that a lot of the stories from other countries focused on Christian religion and skimmed over the traditions of those countries The book is over 50 years old so there were a couple of real wincers that are definitely offensive in today s world one about devoted black slaves in a Southern household and another about a stereotypical drunken Indian There were a few good stories but nothing very memorable Hardcover The Holy Lake is the good one The Cobbler and His Guest and A Christmas Letter are solid too The rest range from fine and forgettable to unpleasant If there is a theme to this collection it s that everyone from every people group and every point in time wants to have something like an American style Christmas and they re all much happier when they do It gets repetitive and judging by the authors names is likely rooted in outside perception than informed insight As you start to sense how many of these stories have only shallow connections to the people they represent you ask yourself as a reader what is unique about this volume It presents itself as a collection of Christmas tales from around the world but it s mostly a collection of stories about the world written by Americans And they re pretty hokey at that Hardcover
