The Polo Ground Mystery By Robin Forsythe
The Polo Ground Mystery By Robin Forsythe Kindle Edition Mystery The Polo Ground Mystery Mr Sutton Armadale, the financier, was shot dead on the private polo ground of his palatial home. Before expiring in his gamekeeper’s arms, he muttered the one word “murder”. Among the suspects are Armadale’s second wife; a drunken, loud mouthed stranger in the neighbourhood; and an irresistibly attractive ballerina. The amiable and eccentric Algernon Vereker finds the case as befuddling as a crack on the head from a polo mallet. Two witnesses were certain they heard two shots fired, yet only one spent cartridge case was found on the ground by the dead man’s body. What is the “Sutton Stakes” connection… and is a “Bombay Head” part of the solution? The Polo Ground Mystery (1932) is a classic country house whodunit, with a sporting equestrian theme. The second of the Algernon Vereker mysteries, this new edition is the first published in over 70 years. It features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans. The polo ground mysterygum Robin Forsythe died in 1937 from Dean St Publishers Website site_link Two and a half stars I have to say that I found this book hard going I persevered to the end to see what happened but can t say that I particularly enjoyed it The writing is good though with plenty of obscure words Mystery I rather liked this book The book had a slow start but it is unusual in it s tone Quite weary and pessimistic and the fact that the ending is a bit unusual actually added to my enjoyment I can t say I would read the entire series one after another because the MC has a similar world view as Miss Marple in that he expects the worst of people and it comes across a little depressing but essentially it seems like a dose of realism in a genre where often puzzles are solved and mysteries tidied up cleanly I m definitely up for reading the other books available by Forsythe Mystery An interesting mystery kicks off this book by Robin Forsythe a well to do financier is discovered dead on his own polo grounds the only clues a single gun cartridge that doesn t match the bullets in the man and two small holes in the ground. The polo ground mysterylab And nearly everyone from his wife nephew and guests have possible reasons to kill him Enter painter and amateur sleuth Algernon Vereker who works very well with the police often coordinating what each will look into A little two friendly to my way of thinking what cop wants an amateur mucking around on their turf Written in 1932 The Polo Ground Mystery sets up a good mystery and very interesting characters who sometimes say things to Vereker that they shouldn t Some of Vereker s deductions are tough to understand and hard to believe for this time period but still the story was fun to read even when the solution comes in just too pat to be believable Mystery For my full review click on the link below Mystery A classic country house whodunit with a sporting equestrian theme Mystery It s six years since I read the first in the Algernon Vereker series reprinted by Dean Street Press but I remembered enjoying it and thought I would try the second book Eccentric and talkative artist detective Vereker is called in to help Inspector Heather who also featured in the first in the series with another murder case The pair both frequently refer to the first book just editing to say I now don t think this involves spoilers A financier has been shot dead in the grounds of his country house but various aspects of the case don t add up and there is a long list of possible suspects. The Polo Ground Mystery epublishing I found this one a fun read with twists that I didn t see coming and a lot of witty dialogue vaguely reminiscent of Georgette Heyer s mysteries or early Wimsey although Forsythe has his own mischievous flavour The sheer amount of talk does slow the story down and at times gets a bit much and there are also a lot of characters to keep track of but overall I enjoyed it and won t leave it six years before reading the next one Mystery
