Countless thanks to NetGalley for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review. This book just became the best title Ive read all summer. Its in the top 5 of my all0timem best nonfiction texts.Brad Snyder is a name few people know, yet he deserves to be recognized for what hes done on the battlefield and in the pool. I hesitate to call him a hero, because heroes tend to be glamorized, but Snyder is the closest thing to a hero Ive heard of. Growing up, Snyders passion was swimming, which led him to follow his familys military service with a stint in the Navy and eventually a position an an Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer on two tours of duty. In September of 2011, he was blinded in an explosion. After enduring a few months of surgeries and rehabilitation, he re entered the pool and rediscovered the freedom and independence he knew on his childhood swims. Within one year of losing his sight, Snyder was in training, qualified, and competing as a gold medal swimmer at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. No matter who you are, any reader must recognize the incredible inspiration he creates. Few people could endure the trauma of a battlefield explosion, adapt to the new living conditions resulting from vision loss, condition their bodies to the levels of competitive swimming, or qualify for an international competition like the Paralympic Games yet Brad Snyder did all of this in a year.Besides the inspirational content of Snyders autobiography, I marveled at the skill with which he and Tom Sileo told his story. The prologue opens the text with an incredibly vivid description of Snyders last morning of sight. I could clearly envision the landscape he recalled from Afghanistan, from the colors of the sunrise to the texture of the mountain range and surrounding fields. And the descriptions never falter throughout the text the Florida lake where he fell in love with swimming, the Naval Academys Memorial Hall where he served restriction formations and made life altering resolutions, the personalities he encountered and learned from during his training and deployments, the dark days after the explosion, and the brighter days surrounding the Paralympic Games. Snyder also does an excellent job of telling the truth as he tells the story. He acknowledges the difficult changes he had to endure, like learning to count his steps, using the computer again, putting toothpaste on a toothbrush, or retrieving his guide dog when she was off the leash. He sugarcoats nothing, even describing his darkest days and his need for a phone call to his mom. Finally, he explains many elements of a career and competition that may be unfamiliar to his readers (like me), without oversimplifying or over detailing the technicalities. Basically, he gives readers what they need to understand, while also acknowledging their maturity and basic awareness.
