I m happy to say that I have known of Varg for a long long long time Since the 1990s in fact Much like European Polytheism Pagan or Heathenism something always known about but in a dark murky mysterious way He has steadily come to be known by me each year until I swear he is my friend and I get his little idiosyncratic ways I think this really helped me to understand his book and writing style I know this I believe his version of European history much then the traditional one taught by Universities and the Roman Catholic Church While the entire book is of great use it is the last 6 sections that really have some kick and bring the point home 92 Short book but not an easy read Refreshing look on pagan Europe and what christianity did to it Varg repeats himself a lot but that s not necessarily a bad thing it makes me better understand what he actually means 92 The key to read this book is to approach it with a what if attitude If you take it as a scientific review of ancient European religion you ll be tempted to find flaws here obscurities there and end up with a bad impression like who the Hell this Varg guy thinks he is But that will make your read unsatisfying Do yourself a favor don t go that way just imagine what if it is true Because maybe it is 92 Very interesting but not well written there is a lot of repetition word for word It definitely opened up my curiosity regarding european paganism I ll go learn some and perhaps come back to this book with knowledge on the subject 92 a little of reflections on european mythology and polytheism and a lot of beef against christianism 92 This 92 page book is a collection of texts from Thulean Perspective about European polytheism and mythology and related topics written by Varg Vikernes author of Sorcery and Religion in Ancient Scandinavia as well as MYFAROG Reflections on European Mythology and PolytheismRead this for a course on the reception of Norse Myth and if you have any interest or love for the subject stay far away This is malicious nonsensical garbage Incredibly frustrating and hateful 92 Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence This pamphlet suffers from the same problem that every VV work I have read does a lack of cogency and evidence For example Varg claims that I am actually rather hopelessly a religious person and find the Ancient European Neanderthal religion so important Every other religion on this planet is just a misrepresentation and misconception of the Ancient European religion and some times even a twisted sinister perverted and soiled version of it as well This is one hell of a claim A claim that Varg backs up with absolutely no discussion of other world religions or how they came to descend from this one source haha Another stunning claim from Varg is that Europeans are Neanderthals and Africans are Homo Sapiens Every time that this idea is alluded to in this pamphlet it is casually dropped in for example The human mind is able to understand eternity but not to really fathom it This might be some sort of cosmic censorship but likely it is a result of the mixing between Neanderthals Europeans and Homo sapiens Africans The Neanderthals probably understood and fathomed eternity well but Homo sapiens did not and not those mixed with Homo sapiens either as if this is the accepted norm and no proof of this momentous shift in genetic understanding is needed I do find it hilarious though that Varg proposes that race mixing or according to Varg species mixing is perhaps divinely punished Anyways despite these and other glaring tidbits of outlandishness this has been my favorite VV work to date The etymological breakdown of important words names of deities and place names is very interesting and compelling There are also many points contained within ROEMAP that I found thought provoking and very interesting as well as claims that are quite out there but within the realm of possibility and I would have very much enjoyed reading a proper case made for them instead of the presumption that I will accept whatever the author writes as doctrine What did I really expect out of a 92 page pamphlet though Overall the entire work is unfortunately for me clouded over by some of the ridiculousness of it but it was an ok read and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to read something from this author since it contains stimulating concepts than SOTSB or the Paganism Explained series Sorcery in Ancient Scandinavia not included since I haven t read it yet 92 I wish i could ve enjoyed this but I simply couldn t It gets 3 stars because Varg saves it towards the end andwell because I must admit I have a soft spot for Varg the Bard for Varg the authornot so much. Book reflections on european mythology and polytheism pdf free Regardless the first half of the book is just atrocious His analysis of the pre Christian traditions mythology and rituals is just farfetched and only seldomly can actually be argumented with etnological and anthropological facts Moreover his linguistical reconstructions are just as bad and inconsistent He gives no real evidence of such linguistical phenomena he supports his claims with arguments that he himself takes for granted and expects us to do the same and so on He qutes Frazer here and there which is good but fails to quote Mircea Eliade one of the leading voices in the study of mythology amd one of the few mainstream scholars that actually departed from a christian centric vision of pre Christian rituals and believes although he obviously makea use of some of his ideas even if by mistake If it wasnt for the second half of the book and for the few very good texts where he gives his insight on the matters mentioned above this book would ve been a total disappointment 92 In European polytheism man becomes a deity on Earth by impersonating him He goes through an initiation process he improves he matures he becomes better he cultivates the divine in himself and through that becomes a god himself The divine is always there inside him and all around him influencing the course of events So the gods and man live next to each other in the same world They all live in Asgardr the spirit garden the crown of the tree of life 74 I first read this book in November 2016 being the month of Nothing But Black Metal November For several years I ve been something of a fan of Varg Vikernes s music under the Burzum name but I think I eventually started feeling Burzum to be too obvious in its greatness and so sought other black metal I recall a lot of Havohej that year for example That said I still thought it would be a fun idea to read one of Varg s books and this one was on for like 6 Accordingly I felt compelled to read the book while listening to Varg s music which I think in 2016 was mostly Dau i Baldrs and Hli skj lf but which in my 2020 re read was merely Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem. Pdf reflections on european mythology and polytheism free download There s some silly shit in here Kristian Vikernes denounces black and death metal as not being true music for the European spirit yet he uses his stage name on the front of the book in order to profit from an association with his Burzum musical project which in fairness he s moved toward a dungeon synth style evolving from his prison albums but it s still ironic that he would reuse the Burzum name to keep asses in seats You also have a brief mention where Varg almost espouses his belief in an autistic ubermensch as professed elsewhere his Twitter and the removed YouTube videos as well as a pro Neanderthal sentiment that s always kind of weird for me to read And of course you have Varg saying something about the Judeo Christian invaders tolerating Satanism over paganism openly ignoring the early Satanic content of Burzum music as well as Varg accusing the Judeo Christians of making a mockery of European religion by turning it into fun little mythic stories whereby Varg is dangerously close to demonizing Tolkein from whose work he took the Burzum name Tolkein s name goes unmentioned and IIRC Varg s Twitter considers Tolkein to be a European insider using Catholic allegory to bring the old religion back to the people There s also a feeling that Varg wrote openly against Jews and just did a find and replace to turn the word Jewish to Judeo Christian since Christian is rarely seen without that prefix. Kindle reflections on european mythology and polytheism summary As far as the overall message of this book Varg s understanding of the old European religion makes it seem like a mix of Hinduism and Gnosticism The Hindu link would make sense as the Indians and Europeans share common ancient background The Gnostic stuff is ironic because of how anti Christian Varg is but it kinda works in the sense that even merely dipping one s toes into Gnostic concepts is infinitely fulfilling than the banalities of the contemporary Protestantism A major idea is that ancient Europeans reach godlike levels of mind and spirit through a traditional ritual involving a metaphoric contact with the dead He claims the Judeo Christian lore rips this off by making Jesus seem special for doing what every European man did to come of age He then shits on the Saints for not being divine whereas I think it could be rather fair to credit the Saints with some power while openly shitting on the profane laypeople but whatever What I mean is Varg touts the average European as being superior to the average Judeo Christian so we may as well say the super Christians approach the average European level in some way And perhaps we might go further to say only one single man Jesus successfully pulled off what any Teutonic teen could do which I think is far funnier than merely discrediting Jesus s feats.
