A collection of essays as this one often than not proves a mixed bag with a few gems thinly distributed among the chaff Happily this collection defies the common experience that reading such anthologies usually brings All of the essays appearing here are excellent with one exception which has I think only been overcome by the passage of time. Book james joyce's finnegans wake analysis Published in 1991 James Joyce s Finnegans Wake A Casebook edited by John Harty III collects essays previously published in a variety of sources with a number of them revised for republication here Because Harty s selection for his collection is superb it s difficult to single out a few contributors for closer examination in a brief review To begin with Bernard Benstock s well known working outline of Finnegans Wake is an excellent way to open this small conglomeration Benstock also contributes a thought provoking consideration of the influence of Edgar Quinet s Introduction la philosophie de l historie de l humanit on the Wake This is followed in short order by David Hayman s recounting of the writing process of the Wake and Colin MacCabe s general survey of the Wake s contents David Hayman s second contribution to the book Notes for the Staging of Finnegans Wake I found less compelling but I think this is largely because we now think in terms of film than theater as a rule and we are accustomed to accepting adaptations as a director s often distorted vision that is decidedly distinct from that of the author John Gordon provides compelling insights concerning Judaism and Jewishness in the Wake which of course apply equally well to Ulysses. Finnegans wake james joyce pdf I was less interested in Vincent J Cheng s thesis concerning the artist as god and his corpus as his creation than I was impressed by the wealth of his observations concerning the Wake Shakespeare Dublin s theatres Canvassing perhaps a surprisingly small number of concrete examples Alan S Loxterman manages to superbly span the artistic gulf that seems to divide Ulysses from Finnegans Wake In a similar manner David W Robinson focuses on Joyce s repeated mining and reconfiguring his own past in his writing zeroing in on Grace in Dubliners on the book of Job and to a lesser degree on Swift s Tale of a Tub but as with Cheng I found Robinson s individual arguments intriguing than the frame within which he sets them. James joyce's finnegans wakeboard poem Of course I ve scarcely skimmed off the top millimeter or so of the foam atop the substance of any of these essays and I ve neglected to even mention a number of others I would only say that I would gladly recommend this book while I might be less enthusiastic about certain others when the matter of thoughtful explication of Finnegans Wake is concerned English
