The Winter Bird By Daniel Forster

The Winter Bird By Daniel Forster Kindle Edition The Winter Bird The Winter Bird Description An Inuit hunter stands alone on a bluff above the arctic coast. His long hair flayed from the wind gusting off the ocean below. In the distance approaches a sailing vessel like no other the hunter has ever seen. This is first contact. The events that unfold have roots back to the beginning of human history with consequences for the present day. In the current time, the Inuit community has adapted. There are cities and villages that need modern management. Coming to this land is George Day. A City Planner who after working in a variety of places takes the job as Planning Director for Alaska’s North Slope Borough. Based in Barrow, 350 miles above the Arctic Circle, he finds a surprisingly diverse community rich in history and culture. One of his staff members, Roland Caraviuq, is the Oral Historian who serves as the conduit connecting the past to the present. George’s knowledge and interest in history helps create a bond between these two men. An outside developer comes to Barrow with a proposal to construct a high tech cryogenics facility. It is a flawless offer. In the face of declining taxes based on the oil industry, this opportunity will support the fragile local economy. Moreover, the firm’s life preserving services will be given to community members at no cost. Planning staff are favorable, the Mayor and Governor are supportive, the elders agree. But the Oral Historian has serious doubts that only grow extreme over time. George Day is inclined to take a rational and logical approach but is inexorably drawn to Roland’s way of thinking. They find themselves conspicuously alone in this view. Roland and George undertake a perilous winter trek by snowmobile across frozen tundra to find answers. The interplay between the developer, George, and Roland results in exposing historical connections stretching to ancient Egypt and beyond and evolving to the current time. The conflict erupts as a devastating battle between the rational world, the world of tailored deceit, the manipulation of base human drives, and belief in one’s faith and core values.
