An absolutely fantastic collection of informative beautifully illustrated and fun stories with animals at their heart but learning at their forefront I can t think of a better way to educate and encourage young readers to care about the natural world and the creatures they come across Equally the books don t shy away from important issues such as global warming which may not always resonate with small readers straight away but still encourage that we take care with the animals of the World Even the seemingly scary or yucky ones The ten stories each focus on a single animal worms wolves polar bears tigers sharks emperor penguins loggerhead turtles caterpillars blue whales and frogs The pages are each fully illustrated with the animal and their habitat but also with some of the interactions these animals might have such as a pack of wolves hunting together in a pack or three tiger cubs play fighting I think this is a lovely addition and the illustrations are so life like in many of these books that they really make all the difference when trying to engage young children Ultimately they made the reading experience feel like fun and less like learning when actually it s pretty evenly matched Some of the stories are stronger than others largely from personal preference of the child but one or two are less captivating than the others The Caterpillar Butterfly story and the Polar Bear stories are the least well illustrated and least enjoyable of the ten unfortunately because of that in my experience small children struggle to engage with a story when they have less opportunity to interact with pictures or put the words they re reading into context with a drawing Having said that I particularly liked that some of the authors tackled some animal stigmas Surprising Sharks and Walk With A Wolf are probably the best example of this how often do children describe sharks as being pointy toothed scary killers Or think of wolves and compare them with the nasty Big Bad Wolf Almost always And the surprising sharks book actually tries to dispel this idea by introducing lots of different sharks of all shapes and sizes who only put shrimp at risk instead of humans Whilst the wolf story shows that wolves are survivalists hunting to make sure that they live on to feed their pups I thought this was brilliant and of real value within these books I wouldn t hesitate to recommend this collection it s something I think all young readers should have on their shelves A colourful vibrant collection of picture books sprinkled with facts about our sometimes furry friends.
