Case of Winter KingNot my favorite Kiernan Kelly book but it s still good I didn t care that much for the beginning but it kept getting better and better I d love to see another book following up where this one left off No cliffhanger but lots of interesting characters 216 pages 35 starsI liked it I always enjoy stories of people with supernatural power Having said that I still had uestions about the fact that view spoilerpeople died after Winter used his power so was that coincidence or not It is never answered hide spoiler 216 pages The Curious Case of Winter King by Kiernan KellyParanormal investigation at the government level Mind games bending a spoon moving an object guessing the card And then there are the truly Gifted healing earthuakes rain How much is real 1968 Area 51 Hippies in Haight Ashbury San Francisco Groovy man Right on Lobotomy for a mental illness Winter King has the Gift of healing After being run out of his home he has drifted across the States leaving each time he s healed someone He follows where the Gift directs He knows The Man is coming after him When Michael tracks Winter down the Gift says they belong together I liked this premise and trip to the late 60 s The little details of the time thrown in and the consistent language of the time was entertaining and fascinating The romance and the good deeds were hopeful and peaceful 216 pages This is a novel that suffers from a terrible cover and an out of date look That makes a mountain to climb in the field of mm romance Winter King has the ability to heal injuries or diseases He also has the ability to respond to death the same way he can revive the dead The problem is that for each person he saves another person has to die Winter King s ability is saving one life at the expense of another That is a valued commodity in the vietnam war era and secret plans are made to capture Winter and others who possessed the same abilities Michael is the government agent who works in an little known government agency and is charged with the responsibility to meet and detain Winter Michael believes that Winter will be the subject of testing to see if his special gift exists in everyone unknown to Michael he is being shadowed by a military henchman whose job it is to make certain that Winter is taken into custody dead or alive Winter is taken into custody by the military henchman and Michael ends up saving him The balance of the story becomes a rescue mission to save every other person who has been captured by the government to use their respective Gifts for improper purposes Those with the Gift are gathered together by the government in a civil war mansion in a town called Fancy Gap Virginia Winter and Michael approach Fancy Gap through woods and local roads so they cannot be tracked They end up freeing all of the children and adults who had been captured by the government The plan is to get the ragtag group back to Winter s home town in the Appalachian mountains where they can be safe On the escape mission it is learned that even the children have outstanding powers and the hold off an entire army infantry that is trying to recapture them The group of individuals with the Gift spend their time in the West Virginian Appalachian mountains where they remain safe until the administration changed Once the administration changes no one really cares any about the ragtag group of individuals with special supernatural gifts And those with their gifts live happily ever after Overall it is a cute little story that is a strong three star story 216 pages Review written for Love bytes ReviewsWinter King is a man on the run Hunted by those that would use his gifts to harm rather than help he s constantly moved from place to place afraid to settle down When he meets Michael however he knows that something is different Michael may be one of those tasked with bringing Winter in but there s something about the man that makes him want to take a chance and trust As Winter s greatest fears are realized and the magnitude of their predicament comes to light however he ll have to decide whether trusting Michael is the right thing to do or if he d be better off as he was before aloneLet me start by saying that I DID enjoy the overall concept of the story but it seemed like every time I d start to get into it some inconsistency would pluck me out of the happy reading space I d gotten to You learn much about Winter than you ever do about Michael and that was a shame as he s there the entire time and it almost felt as though his character development was a bit of an afterthought The pacing was good however and the story wasn t completely overshadowed by the romance part of the bookSo while I liked the concept of this story I m sorry to say I found parts of the execution a hindrance to my enjoyment For starters the beginning of the book sounds like the intro to a fantasy story rather than from a village in the mountains and that disconnect I felt caused kind of a ripple effect of problems as the story progressed From there you go into a modern almost contemporary feel only to be dragged back into hippie speak I know the book is set at the end of the 60s but the dialogue and setting just kept bouncing back and forth too much for me to find my footing Winter is from the mountains but his manner of speaking kept going between talking like anyone else would to speaking like his place of birth to reverting back to being a hippie and it justtook away from the enjoyment of what I was reading Honestly I probably won t read this one again as it just drove me too batty trying to get through it but if you like paranormal stories and think you can handle the dialogue problems you might enjoy it 216 pages
