Book vanport
Informative book with lots of pictures and resources to understand how a hastily constructed city that was Oregon s second largest 1948 could disappear in a day when the Columbia River overran its banks 1467134791 Being the history buff that I am I really enjoyed this book I grew up in the Portland Vancouver area and we went to Delta park all the time Delta park is now where the city of Vanport was and is now parks and a few business s I really enjoyed the story of what happened and all the pictures showing what Vanport had looked like At the time it was built it was the second biggest city in Oregon It was built for the Kaiser workers that came from all around to build the ships They had an amazing daycare system because at that point women were going to work also and wanted to help out do to the war also and to help support their families They had modern apartments that were fully finished and schools.

Shopping centers a movie theater and 1467134791 This book is a very readable and fast way to learn about the Vanport Oregon on Columbia River Flood of 1948 that wiped out this second largest city in Oregon at the time Photographs and captions on every page give a complete picture of the history of this town built for shipbuilders and their families during WWII the lifestyles of the residents and the disastrous flood which wiped away the town after less than two years Well researched well written with loads of historic photographs 1467134791 Nestled in the floodplain between North Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington a housing project was built to help house World War II shipyard workers Its very name Vanport is derived from Vancouver and Portland When the United States entered the war the demand for ships and for workers to build those ships became a huge priority Workers were recruited from all corners of the United States Portland had a serious lodging shortage so much so that these workers lived in cars tents parks and whatever shelter could be found Vanport built in a little over a year to house them was a city that did not sleep In its heyday Vanport was the second largest city in Oregon with a population of over 40000 residents It was a city with many firsts It was a city that touched many lives in a very short period of time And on May 30 1948 it was a city that disappeared just as quickly as it came into existence leaving a legacy that will not soon be forgotten Vanport Images of America Oregon I had not heard of Vanport until about a year after moving to Portland About four years ago a project of memory activism started a weekend event to commemorate the history honor remaining survivors of the 1948 flood and educate the public. Vanport marine This book also attempts to keep the memory alive through photos and words It tells the story of the creation of Vanport by Henry J Kaiser to house workers needed in his ship building facilities the ship building enterprise during WWII social life in the town and its postwar life The beginnings of Portland State University And the flood. Vanport pa map It is a cleansed version of history Other tellings have given insight by revealing racial aspects of the housing crisis that Vanport sought to solve Of the resettlement after the flood 1467134791 This had a few to many repetitions on the facts The pictures and facts was interesting 1467134791 I went into this looking for information on Vanport as the wartime home of African Americans in Portland having read that it was at one time Portland s largest Black neighborhood If that s so someone should have told this author Where there are 128 pages packed with photos Black faces appear on maybe six of them Mostly from one family with a couple of photos of Black people trudging along the road escaping the flood and two or three children appearing in group photos The text tells us that Vanport was fully integrated but again you couldn t prove it by these photos I don t know if only white people were photographed or if only their photos made it into the historical records or the author only chose white people from the available stores It s impossible to tell but whatever the deal is the history here is incomplete. Vanport flood 1948 However I really enjoyed the history that is present I learned a lot about the old shipyards which is absolutely fascinating and will definitely be pursuing information on that 1467134791 During World War II Vanport was the largest wartime housing project in the United States and the second largest city in Oregon It was built on 650 acres of marshland to house Kaiser Shipyards workers from the facilities at Swan Island Vancouver and St Johns The shipyards were churning out ships for the war open 24 hours a day with three eight hour shifts and drew 120000 workers from all over the country Those workers needed somewhere to live In 1942 Vanport was put into development by Henry J Kaiser owner of Kaiser Shipyards and only a year later it was open and ready for business At its height the housing project held 40000 official residents After the war Vanport started housing veterans and their families On May 30 1948 a devastating flood wiped out the entire town. Vansport sandhill dress shirt The first time I heard about Vanport I was like What An entire city Right into the river It seemed to me to be the sort of thing no one would ever shut up about but despite having lived in the area my entire life I was probably a teenager the first time I heard about it I ve always been fascinated by Vanport the idea that a city could just disappear like that and no one would ever talk about it. Vansport va811 From Oregon Journal Sunday August 3 1947 The name Vanport generally causes well bred shudders and is mentioned only in whispers by natives who despite the fact that to them it is synonymous with murder rape thievery and slumsWell surprise many of the people who lived in Vanport were black At the time of the flood one third of its 18500 residents were black After the war when the majority of the workers left many of ones who stayed were African American 6300 black people might not sound like a lot but prior to this Portland only had about 2000 black residents Vanport tripled the number of black people in town possibly even increased it by a factor of ten by some accounts Because up until 1926 black exclusion laws made it illegal to be black and settle within the borders of what would become the state of Oregon That s right way back in 1844 before it was even a state Oregon decided not to let black folks in Even then it took until 1927 for the law prohibiting black people from voting to be revoked and then there s the redlining which though federally banned in 1968 somehow still flourished in Portland during the 1970s and 80s. Vanport presbyterian church beaver pa None of this is in the book I just read It only mentions black people twice once to say that Vanport was first in the Portland area to hire black teachers and police officers and once to say that Most of the black flood victims were given temporary housing in dilapidated war surplus mobile buildings trucked to vacant land at Guilds Lake a former wartime housing project Excuse me what But such is the nature of this book that it doesn t go on to explain this mysterious statement Most of the black flood victims Whose decision was that and what happened to the rest and why only the black people Podany does briefly raise the spectre of segregation saying that some believed that discrimination governed housing availability of course the author does this without once using the term segregation or describing what group that some belonged to and provides without commentary the Housing Authority of Portland s perfectly reasonable explanation that any racial groupings were just a happenstance of individuals wanting to live close to each other Unclear if that s Podany s endorsement of HAP s statement or simply a summary Equally unclear if housing was assigned by HAP or chosen by the renter Podany goes on to reassure us that James T Hamilton superintendent of Vanport Schools advocated for an equal education for all students and did not allow segregation. Vanport rigging Otherwise the text completely if awkwardly sidesteps any discussion of race and never explicitly mentions class at all Also try this The area between North Portland and the Columbia River is a mix of sloughs lakes and marshes and was used by Native Americans as hunting and fishing grounds until the mid 1800s Lewis and Clark made a notation of this area in their journals In 1855 the land was surrendered to the US government by what remained of the Clackamas tribe White settlers were able to acquire land in the area through donation land claims. Book vanport oregon Gee I wonder what happened in the mid 1800s Someone should look into that That quote s from the first page of chapter one by the way just to set the tone A paragraph later it says Early records show that 633. Vanport rigging portland 25 acres of land including a large lake were granted to George Force and his wife Susan Force under the 1850 Oregon Donation Act Note the discrepancy between the 1850 date when the white folks were able to acquire land through land grants and the 1855 date when the Clackamas surrendered their land to the US government Podany doesn t And then there s this painfully obtuse euphemism on page 29 For Portland which had up to then been a mostly homogeneous population this diverse workforce was not without its growing pains and challenges to social norms. Vanport mechanical I don t think you can tell the story of Vanport without telling the story of racism yet this book tries real hard The pictures and their captions are excellent but this is picture book than history with the same information repeated multiple times and no index or references The majority of the black and white photographs come from historical archives and are meticulously captioned and sourced but the text often sounds like something that someone heard somewhere and rarely comes with sources The pictures are great but I learned including where the dike actually failed and most of the stuff I mention about Oregon and race from this article in Smithsonian Magazine How Oregon s Second Largest City Vanished in a Day by Natasha Geiling I highly recommend the article 1467134791 Very informative but also very repetitive This book easily could have been under 100 pages but it repeated many things 2 3 or 4 times 1467134791
